It is not a "smart" device,
It is a spying device.

        CONTEXT:

privacy laws, including court cases, only recorgnize passwords as part of your right to privacy. so if you lock your phone with biometrics, DHS/TSA/ICE can force you physically to unlock the device. not so with passwords… until now.

prosecutors in Atlanta want to use this case to completely take away the right to privacy with passwords.

this would EVERYTHING, including emails, bank accounts, health care records, open for fascist predation.

is discussing deploying body worn cameras on our police officers. This might sound good from an accountability perspective, but in most cities with police body cameras, the cameras and footage are controlled by the police and are used primarily for surveillance.

Somerville residents, please contact the Finance Committee to ask them to defer acceptance of grant money for cameras until we have more information. Details below.

The very short version is that the Mayor is still trying to rush this specific body cameras policy through without proper deliberation and that is holding a special meeting on July 27th for public comment *and* a vote.

From the perspective of those of us trying to provide current information on this issue to the public, it's incredibly frustrating that *after* the Mayor scheduled this Special Meeting (on very short notice), he then proceeded to update the policy that is being discussed at the special meeting, just two business days before the public is supposed to provide comment (and the Council is supposed to vote).

I’ve decided to post several bite-sized privacy tips here, over the next few weeks, using the hashtag .

For many folks here, especially those following the hashtag, these tips might seem basic or obvious.

I’m hoping to reach folks who maybe haven’t come across some of these before. Any help we can offer people regarding digital privacy I think is good.

Privacy is about so much more than just keeping information secret.

Privacy is also about being asked for permission before others use technology to interfere with our lives.

And about having a "no" accepted.

As long as some believe that they can do anything their technologies are capable of, without respecting other people's boundaries, those technologies will always be a problem rather than a solution.

Anonymous phone lines and burner phones will cease to exist. That means no connected privacy via cellular at protests.

What I find fascinating is that you can almost see how the protocol evolved over time. XMPP has been extended for more than two decades and many of those additions are still visible today.

Direct messages and file attachments work well, which is all I really need. I haven't set up group chats or VoIP and honestly, I probably never will.

One thing I underestimated was the setup. Different services often require their own subdomains and I never managed to get file uploads working reliably behind my reverse proxy. Direct messages worked fine, but as soon as I enabled file uploads, everything started breaking. After spending way too much time troubleshooting it, I eventually gave up and exposed Prosody directly instead.

For clients I'm using Conversations on Android and Dino on my Linux desktop, and I've been really happy with both.

It's been fun exploring another decentralized communication protocol.

That data (supposedly "anonymized") is then handed over to advertisers to target you with scary accuracy — including on your other devices.

What makes me suspicious this time is the speed at which some of the slowest bureaucracies in the world are adopting it and how it's happening in 20+ countries in parallel.

It's like they're all in a group chat, fast-tracking this before resistance can even form.

If we look at companies and organizations like Proton, Wire and Threema, we can see that the European innovation is about privacy, data security and trust.

That isn't wisdom. It's either naïve or deeply stupid.

And it reveals a familiar centrist habit: a profound misunderstanding of what's actually happening, wrapped in a comforting sense of moral superiority.

These are often the same people who insist that left-wing activists are "just as bad as Nazis." The same people who tell you mass surveillance isn't a problem if you have "nothing to hide." The same people for whom democracy begins and ends with casting a ballot every few years, while activism, protest, civil disobedience, and organised dissent are treated as nuisances rather than essential parts of a healthy democracy.

                                                                                                                                                        Authoritarianism rarely arrives wearing jackboots.

The EU accepting the terms of this power struggle is extremely worrying for the rights of Europeans and any third country nationals registered in European databases.

The scheme implies systematic transfers of biometric data and other highly sensitive and subjective “indications of risk” based on European national databases to the US government, which has shown a blatant disregard for basic human rights in its harsh and inhumane treatment of migrants and visitors. In that regard, the draft text does nothing to protect from discrimination based on political opinions, which is worrying because the US is already cracking down political dissent, including its unlawful practice of screening travellers’ social media profiles. The sharing of individual risk assessments to supposedly protect “public security and public order” under the EBSP could further target opposition to the Trump administration, support to transgender people’s rights or protests against the genocide in Gaza expressed (publicly) on social media, with potentially significant impacts, including detention at the borders.

Furthermore it is very difficult to know the terms of the negotiations as the talks are shrouded in secrecy. However, in May 2026, EDRi member Statewatch leaked a “revised version” of the draft Framework Agreement, revealing the direction the future deal has taken."

And they're right in a sense — we do still need to keep going, keep fighting. This victory alone is only a step along the path! But why do you feel it is important to share that right now? Why must we pollute every victory with some sense of additional fear and worry?

We found that this has been happening to tons of users, made worse by LG's shady history with 's that instruct buyers to inform house visitors of third-party microphones in their living room. At no point in the adware or application install did LG or Microsoft ask us for consent or permission to install the software and enable its various permissions. On monitors ranging 1 day old in our office to 3 years old, we've been able to replicate these issues -- including on the LG 34GX900A-B that we just bought (and have now returned, following concerns).

The impact of that would be juggling separate clients for work and personal communications. Anyone have any strong opinions on the quality of Proton’s iOS and MacOS client apps?
