CONTEXT:
privacy laws, including court cases, only recorgnize passwords as part of your right to privacy. so if you lock your phone with biometrics, DHS/TSA/ICE can force you physically to unlock the device. not so with passwords… until now.
prosecutors in Atlanta want to use this case to completely take away the right to privacy with passwords.
this would EVERYTHING, including emails, bank accounts, health care records, open for fascist predation.

Age Verification isn't a technical problem to solve. If you think that, you're missing the point.
It's a social problem used by authoritarian governments as an excuse for population control and censorship.
It's a fundamental attack on free speech and democracy.
It must not be accommodated.
It must be stopped.

#SomervilleMA is discussing deploying body worn cameras on our police officers. This might sound good from an accountability perspective, but in most cities with police body cameras, the cameras and footage are controlled by the police and are used primarily for surveillance.
Somerville residents, please contact the Finance Committee to ask them to defer acceptance of grant money for cameras until we have more information. Details below.
I'm part of a group organizing about police body cameras in Somerville, and Councilor JT Scott will be sponsoring some of us to speak at the Legislative Matters committee meeting on April 28th, but in the meantime there's a Finance Committee agenda item for tomorrow night to approve the mayor's request that we accept and expend a federal grant to buy the cameras.
Here's suggested email language to the Somerville Finance Committee, asking them to defer their decision on accepting federal money for police body cameras. Feel free to customize and make your own:
https://cryptpad.fr/doc/#/2/doc/view/mBlTfGi7K2kraupXw4xsJXohfStmoRJ5ayGX6K6N2NQ/
Update on the #Somerville Body Worn Cameras discussion: the Finance Committee has deferred voting on whether to approve budgeting for the cameras.
There's a bit of context here:
https://csindie.com/body-worn-cameras-for-somerville-police-come-with-an-annual-cost-near-a-half-million-dollars/
(NOTE: the date for the upcoming Legislative Matters meeting is April 21, *not* the date listed in the article.)
Here is the latest update from the Somerville ad hoc group working on the body cameras issue: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRiU1P7QeQoR9Tbx-xr1wzevoa7D5UnRo8kRdEws6CFHLEgDCU7EzDkR60PAv4Rk0FByuZemkjya95c/pub
The very short version is that the Mayor is still trying to rush this specific body cameras policy through without proper deliberation and that #Somerville is holding a special meeting on July 27th for public comment *and* a vote.
This is *not* the public comment session that was requested by petition.

We're asking #Somerville residents concerned about the rushed process on body camera policy to attend the special meeting on July 27th to insist on proper deliberation.

Update: On July 23rd, the Mayor introduced a new version of the STIR and TSSUP for police #bodycameras in #Somerville. The new documents clarify a number of policy points, but don't substantively address the concerns we've highlighted in our toolkit above.
From the perspective of those of us trying to provide current information on this issue to the public, it's incredibly frustrating that *after* the Mayor scheduled this Special Meeting (on very short notice), he then proceeded to update the policy that is being discussed at the special meeting, just two business days before the public is supposed to provide comment (and the Council is supposed to vote).

Just so you know, we need to push back against privacy-invasive regulations.
Each and every time.
Shrugging and using a VPN will not save you. They will come for the VPNs next.
Then the ISPs.
Then more.
Pushing against unjust laws matters.
The tools alone will not save you in the long run.
I’ve decided to post several bite-sized privacy tips here, over the next few weeks, using the hashtag #QuickPrivacyTips.
For many folks here, especially those following the #privacy hashtag, these tips might seem basic or obvious.
I’m hoping to reach folks who maybe haven’t come across some of these before. Any help we can offer people regarding digital privacy I think is good.
Privacy is about so much more than just keeping information secret.
Privacy is also about being asked for permission before others use technology to interfere with our lives.
And about having a "no" accepted.
As long as some believe that they can do anything their technologies are capable of, without respecting other people's boundaries, those technologies will always be a problem rather than a solution.

📺 Your Smart TV is watching you back
You probably have an ad blocker on your computer. Maybe even on your phone. But on your TV? Almost certainly not.
It makes sense: you can’t just install a standard browser extension there, and it feels like your Smart TV is just a big screen for movies and shows.
In reality, it’s one of the most curious residents in your home.
Most modern TVs use a technology called ACR — Automatic Content Recognition. The TV periodically takes "snapshots" of whatever is on screen and checks them against a database. That's how the manufacturer knows exactly what you're watching: live channels, streaming services, console games, and even videos played from a USB stick. That data (supposedly "anonymized") is then handed over to advertisers to target you with scary accuracy — including on your other devices.

However you look at it, #ageverification is a major change to the internet and our freedoms.
We've seen all kinds of legislation pushed through in the past, often even against major resistance.
What makes me suspicious this time is the speed at which some of the slowest bureaucracies in the world are adopting it and how it's happening in 20+ countries in parallel.
It's like they're all in a group chat, fast-tracking this before resistance can even form.

Deep into the middle of society, many people genuinely believe that age checks for social media, or even for using computers in general, are a good thing because they "protect the children."
(note they use the same argument for everything, see: trans rights, censorship, etc)
That isn't wisdom. It's either naïve or deeply stupid.
And it reveals a familiar centrist habit: a profound misunderstanding of what's actually happening, wrapped in a comforting sense of moral superiority.
These are often the same people who insist that left-wing activists are "just as bad as Nazis." The same people who tell you mass surveillance isn't a problem if you have "nothing to hide." The same people for whom democracy begins and ends with casting a ballot every few years, while activism, protest, civil disobedience, and organised dissent are treated as nuisances rather than essential parts of a healthy democracy.
Authoritarianism rarely arrives wearing jackboots.
More often, it arrives dressed as "common sense," asking you to surrender your rights for your own good.

"The US’s excessive demands for travellers’ profiling and surveillance in order to stay in its Visa Waiver Programme are nothing less than blackmail. The EU accepting the terms of this power struggle is extremely worrying for the rights of Europeans and any third country nationals registered in European databases.
The scheme implies systematic transfers of biometric data and other highly sensitive and subjective “indications of risk” based on European national databases to the US government, which has shown a blatant disregard for basic human rights in its harsh and inhumane treatment of migrants and visitors. In that regard, the draft text does nothing to protect from discrimination based on political opinions, which is worrying because the US is already cracking down political dissent, including its unlawful practice of screening travellers’ social media profiles. The sharing of individual risk assessments to supposedly protect “public security and public order” under the EBSP could further target opposition to the Trump administration, support to transgender people’s rights or protests against the genocide in Gaza expressed (publicly) on social media, with potentially significant impacts, including detention at the borders.
Furthermore it is very difficult to know the terms of the negotiations as the talks are shrouded in secrecy. However, in May 2026, EDRi member Statewatch leaked a “revised version” of the draft Framework Agreement, revealing the direction the future deal has taken."

Been reading about i2p recently, and I was wondering, why isn't it more popular?
It's sounds like a recreation of an old internet, with anonymity as a bonus.

"Against Pessimism"
> I know that it feels wrong to celebrate a small victory when so much else wrong is going on, but I promise you we won't be able to make it to the end if this is our outlook on life. If everything is terrible and nothing good ever happens or is talked about, then why should we even fight for the next victory?
...
> Nearly every single time I see one of their blog posts shared around on social media where they celebrated a victory they've made, there's always somebody in the comments complaining about how it didn't go far enough, that we still haven't done enough. And they're right in a sense — we do still need to keep going, keep fighting. This victory alone is only a step along the path! But why do you feel it is important to share that right now? Why must we pollute every victory with some sense of additional fear and worry?

⚠️ DO NOT BUY: LG’s Spyware TVs, Monitors, and Wiretapping Concerns
The attached #video details the absolute #privacy horror of LG #television and #monitor products, that install #adware without consent, have #AI integration, and a horrible privacy policy..
> LG recently forced upon us an app install loaded with #McAfee adware through a #Windows update. We found that this has been happening to tons of users, made worse by LG's shady history with #TV's that instruct buyers to inform house visitors of third-party microphones in their living room. At no point in the adware or application install did LG or Microsoft ask us for consent or permission to install the software and enable its various permissions. On monitors ranging 1 day old in our office to 3 years old, we've been able to replicate these issues -- including on the LG 34GX900A-B that we just bought (and have now returned, following #spyware concerns).
I’m considering moving personal email, vpn, and other services over to proton.me. It looks like it will not be an easy transition as it would require me to switch email and calendar clients. The impact of that would be juggling separate clients for work and personal communications. Anyone have any strong opinions on the quality of Proton’s iOS and MacOS client apps?
