#SomervilleMA is discussing deploying body worn cameras on our police officers. This might sound good from an accountability perspective, but in most cities with police body cameras, the cameras and footage are controlled by the police and are used primarily for surveillance.
Somerville residents, please contact the Finance Committee to ask them to defer acceptance of grant money for cameras until we have more information. Details below.
I'm part of a group organizing about police body cameras in Somerville, and Councilor JT Scott will be sponsoring some of us to speak at the Legislative Matters committee meeting on April 28th, but in the meantime there's a Finance Committee agenda item for tomorrow night to approve the mayor's request that we accept and expend a federal grant to buy the cameras.

From the perspective of those of us trying to provide current information on this issue to the public, it's incredibly frustrating that *after* the Mayor scheduled this Special Meeting (on very short notice), he then proceeded to update the policy that is being discussed at the special meeting, just two business days before the public is supposed to provide comment (and the Council is supposed to vote).

What's exposed:
- Email addresses
- Names
- Country
- Date of birth (they call it "borned_date" lol)
- Account role (it's "PRAYER" for everyone, obviously)
Also found:
- Signup endpoint returns the email verification token in the response body, so you can verify accounts without accessing the inbox
- Their verification emails fail their own domain's authentication requirements
Reported January 3rd. Emailed 9 people. A journalist also contacted them. Zero responses. Still live six months later. Vow of silence I guess.

Ok... So I used to use Chipolo because they had bluetooth device finders that were no in the find my iphone or android device hub. I know this means I am less likely to find a stolen thing. But they allowed me to find my keys when the kid ran off with them or the fire tv remote when it was shoved in the couch.

What I find fascinating is that you can almost see how the protocol evolved over time. XMPP has been extended for more than two decades and many of those additions are still visible today.
Direct messages and file attachments work well, which is all I really need. I haven't set up group chats or VoIP and honestly, I probably never will.
One thing I underestimated was the setup. Different services often require their own subdomains and I never managed to get file uploads working reliably behind my reverse proxy. Direct messages worked fine, but as soon as I enabled file uploads, everything started breaking. After spending way too much time troubleshooting it, I eventually gave up and exposed Prosody directly instead.
For clients I'm using Conversations on Android and Dino on my Linux desktop, and I've been really happy with both.
It's been fun exploring another decentralized communication protocol.

I haven't settled yet on what's a decent VPN alternative, although my current frontrunners are Njalla (run by a co-founder of The Pirate Bay) and Nebula by Defined.net. Not sure about their politics, but distributed and Nebula is FOSS which is a positive signal, while not a guarantee.

Windscribe - Transphobic indications
Mullvad - Funding a fascist leaning party

Deep into the middle of society, many people genuinely believe that age checks for social media, or even for using computers in general, are a good thing because they "protect the children."
(note they use the same argument for everything, see: trans rights, censorship, etc)
That isn't wisdom. It's either naïve or deeply stupid.
And it reveals a familiar centrist habit: a profound misunderstanding of what's actually happening, wrapped in a comforting sense of moral superiority.
These are often the same people who insist that left-wing activists are "just as bad as Nazis." The same people who tell you mass surveillance isn't a problem if you have "nothing to hide." The same people for whom democracy begins and ends with casting a ballot every few years, while activism, protest, civil disobedience, and organised dissent are treated as nuisances rather than essential parts of a healthy democracy.
Authoritarianism rarely arrives wearing jackboots.
More often, it arrives dressed as "common sense," asking you to surrender your rights for your own good.
