    Good idea: floating power stations

    euronews.com/next/2026/01/29/a

Wind power could soon come from the sky as China has successfully tested a megawatt-class airborne turbine that generates electricity while hovering 2000 metres up.
China has completed a test flight of what it says is the world’s first megawatt-class high-altitude wind power system designed for urban deployment.

Replaced a faulty solar inverter in my garage and added a battery for extra backup. With all that's happening I'm about to splash out on about 20kw of solar panels and look to add more batteries to a container I'm going to set aside for them.
Can I afford them? No. But I can't afford to keep paying huge amounts for power. If anyone knows where I can buy a reasonable 5-10Kw turbine setup in Scotland let me know.

          New community announcement: Solarpunk Scotland

Solarpunk, climate, renewables and ecology related news and discussions related to Scotland. Be braw, respect the slrpnk.net rules, and generally be braw.

The banner image is of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (from Newburgh beach). This is an offshore wind farm which began its life in 2003 and was used as a test case of offshore wind, for other projects around the world to learn and build upon. It was objected to by Donald Trump for spoiling the view from his golf course, which caused great ecological harm to the local sand dunes, and his objections were defeated in court in 2014 and 2015.

The USA is spending over $1B/day on its Iranian misadventure. To put that into perspective, $1B is enough to buy over 10GW of solar panels (@ $0.1/W) or enough batteries for 150,000 cars (@ $100/kWh, 65kWh/car). Every. Day. Remember they spent over $2T on their Iraq misadventure. Keep telling me that renewables are expensive.

UNSW cracked the solar breakthrough that's in nearly every panel today. We pioneered high-efficiency solar cells, then our fossil fuel lobby & corporate masters pressured us to stick with digging dirt instead of building the future. Result? China took the trillion-dollar solar industry we handed them.. 'We gave it to them.' Wake up, Australia.

Mehr heimische Öl- und Gasförderung würde die aktuell steigenden Energiepreise kaum bremsen oder verringern. Erneuerbare Energien und Preisunabhängigkeit dagegen schon. It would be a tragic, horrible irony if the way we got to a renewable energy future is by oil soaked countries and their genocidal, idiotic leaders and hangers on destroying themselves in a final desperate act to secure the entire thing for themselves.

But that would also be entirely human.

We need to have a long and honest talk with our Albertan and other Canadian oil friends and convince them that we need to get out of this sphere as fast as possible for our own safety.

You know what bugs me? When people says something along the lines "The price for wind and solar in the last 10 years has come down x-fold." And then pretend that this was a magic market mechanism or that it simply was The Right Time for renewable tech to emerge victorious/competitive over fossil fuels.

Just as an example, the Energy speaker at UK's National Emergency Briefing does it too
                                              youtube.com/watch?v=_cD1HY5e1H8

But this isn't market magic. The price for solar has plummeted bc of China's subsidies in general. And then, due to COVID, China's real estate crisis had provinces struggle to counter lost revenue. They then lowered biz tax – which attracted new companies – and new companies are mainly those who make or sell new tech, eg PV panels.
And because so many new factories sprung up, PV get sold for a dime a dozen.

WE, our nations, could have done that 10 years ago already. We, our nations, SHOULD have heavily subsidised PV and wind turbine manufacturing and R&D 10 years ago.

It's not market magic. And it's not because This Is Simply The Right Time. No. It's subsidies, subsidies, subsidies, and it's 10 years too late!! 😡

The scale of the energy consumption of DCs is truly mind-blowing.

As EDF admit the Hinkley Point C Nuclear reactor's start date has again slipped & the budget continues to climb from its original planned cost, we might ask whether continuing with nuclear power is really a sensible use of money.

The share of electricity generation by nuclear has been dropping, other methods of peak capacity coverage are available (as might be storage for renewable generated energy) & costs are climbing

is it time to call a halt to nuclear power?

Terrible timing all around, but it's an act of resistance, and it feels amazing.
