buc.ci is a Fediverse instance that uses the ActivityPub protocol. In other words, users at this host can communicate with people that use software like Mastodon, Pleroma, Friendica, etc. all around the world.
This server runs the snac software and there is no automatic sign-up process.
Hosting a my small static websites, I wonder if my roughly 40MBit uplink with a static IP is good enough to host it.

https://videos.talania.dnshome.de/

New blog post: Speeding Up Forgejo CI with a Custom OCI Image
My blog's pipeline spent more time installing dependencies than actually building the site. Two commits and one Containerfile later, that step is gone entirely.
Bonus: Forgejo ships with a built-in OCI container registry, so the whole thing is self-contained on a single instance. No Docker Hub, no external registry.

Should I get a .earth domain? I like the ring of it. Like, you know, I'm a citizen of Earth, fuck borders and nationalists and all that. The company behind it doesn't seem to be evil, but information is sparse.
Was ist also der Fehler gewesen.
#certbot #letsencrypt #linux #selfhosting @bjoernGood morning Fedi friends!
A routine reminder that I've been running a series of #blog posts - "a newbie's guide to #selfhosting with #YunoHost" - and so far I've published 5 articles:
🔗 : https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-with-yunohost/
Every week I receive messages from people mentioning how my guide helped them embark on their self-hosting journey. This makes me SO HAPPY, thank you!
I wonder if you have requests for future articles? Or do you think the series is now complete?
Journey with self hosting for personal blog and fediverse
Hello, I followed the "selfhosted" instance on LemmyWorld in order to be able to talk about my experiences having them in order, without confusing criteria into Fediverse. Hoping they can be useful to others.
Current setup: Hostinger vps kvm2 plan, Debian12, YunoHost, Hostinger's docker manager installed.
Personal background: blind since birth, (I don't see), I'm mostly a computer power-user, worked and studied with ms-dos since 1989 until late 90s. Basic GNU/Linux knowledge in 2002, then interrupted in 2004.
I don't care talking about disability when discussing unrelated topics but it's necessary in this case as my needs are quite different from others.
So, I've been scared by self-hosting and have had shared hosting web sites until now. Until @_elena started self hosting her digital echosystem from scratch using YunoHost.
Due to lack of drivers I stopped with Linux on my private machine, drivers for the Braille display I had, and then the uneffective (at least for my need) screen reader capabilities on Linux's GUI based distros.
Finally in January 2026 I jumped in the dark after reading Elena Rossini's blog about YunoHost and having explored their demo pages. At the worst, I'll cancel the contract...
In the end I've managed to run WriteFreely, WordPress, CastoPod and GoToSocial, just by YunoHost; but if someone says terminal knowledge is not needed, this is a complete lie.
Where a system (such as YunoHost) can do the dirty work configuring postfix and nginx, I'll support it but it has its disadvantages: not every app can be installed through it.
For me it's very difficult to create and look after a config file on my own, it's frustrating for a sighted to miss a punctuation sign, an apostrophe, an indent. Let alone for me! A single space skipped, can crash a system.
A lie even saying that AI completely helps. It does solve some small, simple, immediate tasks but it has some mistakes as well. The so-called allucinations which create a real mess if you can rely on no personal skill.
Such as "sudo yunohost tools cert-install", or similar. AI wrote "cert-install" while the real command is "cert install"! A power user can get rid of it and correct, a beginner with no command-line knowledge, just copies, pastes, and gets scared.
My late attempt has been Madblog, a static markdown-based blogging platform with Fediverse activitypub in it, so I learned what Docker is and how it basically works. But I gave up, due to several timeouts and activitypub slow-downs. I think I'm going to use WordPress for blogging then. In case of comments it'll be more intuitive for non-fediverse folks.
Hopefully share others' experiences as well!
#ActivityPub #blind #fediverse #introduction #selfhost #selfhosting #WordPress #YunoHost
My search has, thus far, been fruitless so I am asking here as a last ditch attempt …
I am looking for a self-hostable web based application to be an inventory of the (real, rather than e-) #books in the house. It should be able to accept a list of #ISBNs as input for importing items and look them up (with covers) to ingest their metadata.
It doesn't need #library style circulation (I don't want to run a library so don't want #Koha or equivalent)
I've been using #HomeBox which is ok but only understands "things" rather than "books" (I've written a isbn2homebox script to make that easier). I'd like something purpose designed for books though.
Does anyone use anything like this? There are plenty of free or subscription things available online, but I want to run this myself.
Thanks ☺️
This post is a test of a custom rule for Cloudflare I've been working on, and of my own conspiracy theory.
Forgive me my tinfoil hat: I have long suspected that the use of these tags (above), in fact, results in attracting more attention from crawlers/spiders/bots/whatever; that said automated systems exist which are specifically instructed to look for these tags, and to index any and all pages in which they find them.
If and only if my custom rule blocks a notably higher number of attempts to index this post alone, as compared to any of my other posts individually, I assume my theory is true until otherwise proven.
I will provide an update about this whenever I have one.

So I’ve set up my private Paperless-NGX server in a FreeBSD Jail. Quite happy about it.
Special thanks to grembo@ for the great pkg and the even greater man page (https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=paperless-ngx&sektion=7&manpath=freebsd-ports)
Now I need to find a proper scanner I can mass-feed: our konica Bizhub 450i at work is such a piece of crap.
RE: https://blog.fabiomanganiello.com/reply/the-local-tech-neighbourhood
@fabio compares the "just use Linux" guys and "just self-host it" guys to professional and hobbyist bakers who tell people with other priorities to "just make your own bread" in a hypothetical scenario where Big Bread would start to charge subscription fees.
In such a world, hobbyist bakers could offer their friends to make bread for them at modest prices, perhaps even teach those who show interest. They wouldn't tell them all to learn baking and buy the machines and to learn gardening and to grow their own tomatoes because nobody can do everything.
We computer people should start thinking like that: Letting our 10–20 friends in on our DIY Netflix server or Nextcloud instance for a few bucks to cover electricity costs. It's a win-win situation for everyone.
#GlitchySocial #Matrix server now has #WhatsApp and #Signal bridges available for all its users. But I also decided to make the server closed, because maintaining #Element stack with bridges is a pain in the ass, so it’s better to have only a few users I know and trust.

Just read more about #NetBird and excited there is a totally #opensource alternative to #Tailscale. I think I need to wait for Tailscale to do something stupid before switching though. Need that outrage energy to rebuild everything with a new system.

In case you’re wondering how screwed the SSD and broader storage market is:
Just last week, I bought 5 8TB WD Red Pro NAS drives on Amazon to be delivered the following week. Amazon limited me to 3 hard drives, even across multiple orders, so I used my coworker’s account to buy 2 more. I couldn’t find any other high-TBW CMR 8TB hard drives anywhere else, no matter the brand or retailer.
Less than a week later, and now Amazon says “available to ship in 1-2 days”, but “fastest delivery July 21-31”. That’s 18 WEEKS! 4 MONTHS!
Hope none of y’all were planning to buy new hard drives any time soon.
PSA for fellow self-hosters: bots will probe your services. We caught one trying to scrape sensitive files via CrowdSec — .env variants, AWS credentials, config files, and more. Others targeted common PHP/WordPress misconfigs.
If you're running anything public-facing, assume it's being scanned.
This is the best evidence, that Google is going too far.
I got email, that my 200 GB Google One plan is being phased out (with wife we have shared sub for Google Photos), and I have to choose between 100 GB (too small) or 2 TB (too expensive).
Wife, who not even 2 weeks ago asked me how to open file browser on her MacBook, asked me if I can make "some server thingy", to have our photos locally, and not in Google Photos.
So here I am, configuring Immich locally!
Schon geil😁

No shade to the video and other alternatives. They're cool and all and I hope more people move out of Discord so it burns to the ground and never recover again, but I'm 100% confident nobody will talk to me regardless if I use any alternatives to Discord so I'm not seeing myself using one of these anytime soon. It's just pointless for me haha

The price increase from Hetzner made me rethink my personal infrastructure ..
- Migrated last service off an old auction server
- Moved the content of my StorageBox to my FreeBSD ZFS
- Migrated and cancelled a CPX42 VPS instance
- Migrated and cancelled a CAX21 VPS instance
One more CX23 is currently in the process of being virtualized on my Proxmox cluster.
The Mastodon instance burningboard.net is still running there as cloud instances. But the price of those resources will only increase by ~4€/Month and I don't want to migrate it again (Just moved on the current system in December 2025)
So in the end, the Hetzner bill will be considerably lower in the future, since I reduced my infrastructure footprint by a lot and consolidated things on my bare metal servers in a CoLo datacenter 🙂
Sometimes a trigger like that can break through the laziness and have a positive outcome 🥳

Wow, what a difference. After more than a year since I installed friendica, I added memcached. It went from unusably slow to just completely normal and usable!
Why didn't I do this right away? Probably because it's poorly documented that this is even possible.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy I finally fixed the performance issue on my server. Yay!

Ok, my #homelab NAS took a power hit last night. Power went off across the whole house for like 5 seconds. It was in a temporary location and not on a UPS. Since it has come back, it does not see any of its hard drives.
This is how amazing the mastodon #selfhosting community is, though. I came here to start typing out the problem and try to ask for help. I had tried an awful lot of things and nothing was working. So as I carefully reproduced the error, and made sure to take some photos and screenshots that I was going to share... it started working.
Thanks mastodon crew! You all are the best rubber ducks that money can't buy.

I have an #xmpp server now. A #prosody instance. And I need to make a statement.
There are no good clients for macOS and iOS.
I think I tried all of them. #Monal is a lesser evil.
There is also #Fluux that is very good and really looks like software from the current century, but it still doesn’t support encryption.
This is sad 😔
I see a lot of self-hosters have Macs in their #homelab. I’m wondering how it works? Is it still MacOS on it or is it just Apple hardware with Linux on it?

I'm looking for a project to put my PowerEdge R710 to good use! My idea is to install FreeBSD on it and migrate some services currently running on Linux VMs via Proxmox on my PowerEdge R720. Since the software I'm using offers FreeBSD compatibility, this would be a perfect opportunity to utilize the R710's impressive specs:
Dual Intel Xeon X5560 @ 2.8GHz
288GB RAM (fully populated)
6x 1TB SAS drives
What are some alternatives to wordpress? I'm looking for something simple, easy to maintain but also suitable for non-techies to add content to. I don't need a ton of plugins to build webshops and all that, just a CMS and maybe a calendar.
Any suggestions?
I'd go with a static site generator, but I'd like to keep it accessible to non-nerds.
Looked at grav, which on the surface looks like it has what I want, but I got put off by the banners for premium and the AI bullshit.
I'm Blake — reintroducing myself as I'm back on the timeline.
I'm a Cloud Engineer working in Site Reliability and DevOps in the healthcare industry. I design and build highly scalable, resilient infrastructure that powers modern healthcare systems. Day-to-day I work with .NET, JavaScript, and TypeScript to deliver reliable platforms.
Outside of work, I build with Go — creating tools that prioritize performance, privacy, and user empowerment.
A couple things I'm working on:
RideAware — A cycling training platform for building structured training plans, analyzing ride data, and completing indoor workouts all in one place.
Arcline Hosting — A self-hosted web hosting service for people who want to know exactly where their data lives. It runs on hardware I own and operate — no AWS, no Cloudflare, no third-party CDN. Shared, WordPress, and VPS plans with personal ticket and email support.
My core interests span SRE, cloud infrastructure, DevOps/automation, and network engineering. I spend a lot of time with Linux, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and enjoy digging into routing, firewalls, and secure network design.
I'm here because I care about privacy, self-hosting, and building things that give people more control over their own data. Good to be back — looking forward to reconnecting with this community.

The good thing about Movim is that you can also fully self-host it.
There is no place like 127.0.0.1 ✨
I need to clean up my nginx config. Theres so much old shit in there. Also the shitass ammount of goofy ahh comments i left in it is absurd.
New series: FreeBSD Foundationals
Part 1 is about Jails - specifically VNET Jails. What epair interfaces actually are (virtual ethernet cables), how bridges tie them together, why the host is basically a router for your jails, and what devfs rulesets control.
Covers the full lifecycle from jail.conf through pf firewalling with NAT/RDR for IPv4 and direct routing for IPv6. Plus the gotchas that'll cost you hours if nobody warns you.
Not a beginner tutorial, hardcore details. The useful middle.

Good morning Fedi friends!
Monday mornings mean: my weekly ritual of manually backing up my #YunoHost installation (my VPS does automatic daily backups of the whole VPS, but I say: better safe than sorry).
This latest backup is pretty big, because of my increased use of #NextCloud. So in reverse order, from biggest to smallest we have:
1) #GoToSocial : 5.8 GB
2) #PeerTube : 4.3 GB
3) #NextCloud: 3.7 GB
4) #Pixelfed : 1.6 GB
5) #LinkStack : 92 MB
6) #Fail2Ban : 362kb
Happy #selfhosting everyone! And in case you missed it, my self-hosting guide for newbies via YunoHost is available here: https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-with-yunohost/ (with 4 articles so far).
Have a great week everyone!
Backing up things is pretty standard / low stakes.
But I just noticed that virtually ALL the apps on my #YunoHost system have available updates, which means... the hair-raising, palpitations-inducing, let's say a little prayer practice of creating a snapshot of my VPS (easy peasy) and clicking on "Upgrade" by order of importance.
#Fail2Ban and #LinkStack were pretty low stakes - done, no sweat. Plus I love how YunoHost creates backups before upgrading, so you can always revert back if something goes wrong.
Anyway, Pixelfed now and then my sacred triad of GoToSocial, NextCloud and PeerTube.
Wish me luck! 🥵
EDIT: newbie me is more advanced than even I would think so... I'm checking out GitHub's YunoHost page for each app I want to upgrade. Apparently the Pixelfed package has issues so I'm not touching that 😅

Now checking out the other apps...
If you've got Home Assistant automations that are based on the IP address of a device, make sure you give those devices a static IP. You'll save yourself a ton of headache later on. Ask me how I know /s
Total Wild … 🤮 #ki #server #technology #hosting #preise #ai #SelfHosting #selfhosted
