Did you know many of the plants growing in Fish Creek today are invasive species left behind from the area's agricultural past? That's why organizations like the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park Society are so important. They bring the community together to help restore and protect this incredible urban park. Members of our Environment and Sustainability and Indigenous Relations teams recently joined their efforts, planting 100+ native plants and removing a record-breaking 240 kg of invasive species from the Listen Garden. We're grateful to have played a small part in helping keep Fish Creek healthy and vibrant. Reliable electricity generation doesn't happen by chance. This year’s turbine rotor replacement at Shepard Energy Centre took two years of planning, hundreds of interconnected tasks, and coordination between multiple teams from ENMAX, Mitsubishi Power Americas and contractors. This was the facility's third Major Inspection since operations began in 2015 and included Shepard's first ever Major Inspection on the generator rotor. The planned outage involved 24-hour operations over 40 days with over 40,000 direct labour hours – an average 1,000 hours per day! The time lapse offers a glimpse into the scale and complexity of the outage, and the incredible collaboration between the various teams. Trees make our neighbourhoods greener and more beautiful. But when trees grow too close to power lines, they pose a safety risk and can cause an outage, especially during strong winds and storms. Earlier this month, we hosted a tour of the modernized Substation No. 1, a critical component of how we deliver reliable power and continue to meet demand as the city grows. First electrified in early July, Substation No. 1 serves roughly 20,000 customers in Calgary’s core, from downtown offices to residential high rises. Lifting a 63-tonne turbine is no small undertaking. Recently at Shepard Energy Centre, a team of engineers, technicians, coordinators and contractors completed the replacement of one of the plant's natural gas turbines as part of our planned maintenance program. These turbines are periodically removed, inspected, refurbished or replaced to help ensure the facility continues to operate safely and efficiently. While the lift itself is an impressive engineering feat, it represents years of planning and coordination. The work was completed over several weeks with skilled teams working around the clock to execute every step with precision. Proactive maintenance is essential to provide safe and reliable electricity to Alberta’s grid. I recently had the opportunity to visit Alpine Park, one of Calgary's growing communities in the southwest, and see firsthand the work involved in bringing reliable power to new homes and families. The highlight was spending time with Bill Chursinoff, a PSE apprentice, and Bryce Trimmer, a PLT apprentice. Learning about their work, their commitment to safety, and the pride they take in developing their skills was inspiring. They represent the next generation of our workforce, and their dedication gives me confidence in the future.   Behind every energized neighbourhood are skilled crews, planners, engineers, technicians, and apprentices working together to make it happen. Their expertise, teamwork, and commitment to safety ensure families can move into their homes, businesses can run, and communities can grow.   Thank you to Bill, Bryce, and everyone supporting the energization of Alpine Park and communities across our service area.
