Jean-Guy Faubert posted thisA short story from a flight home last week that I haven't been able to shake. I was flying from Helsinki to Toronto with a stop in Frankfurt, seated in a free upgrade to business class. Just after I sat down, the woman beside me asked if I'd trade my window seat for her aisle seat. I usually hold onto my window seat, but I was feeling generous that day. Once we were in the air, she turned to me and said, "You must be Canadian." Her name was Ute, from Germany. She leads fundraising for post secondary institutions across the EU, and she had been at Davos when Mark Carney spoke. She told me she's heard leaders from around the world over the course of her career, but she had never been more moved than by the realness of our Prime Minister... someone who spoke with authority and measure, and who said what few others had the courage to say out loud. What stayed with me most was what came next. She told me that Canada has quietly earned a reputation in Europe as a stable, values driven democracy, one that holds the line on multilateralism and rules based trade, and that people there have taken notice. After twenty five years working across enterprise, SaaS, and the maritime and logistics sectors, I've sat in a lot of rooms where "trust" gets used loosely. Hearing a stranger describe our country's reputation in those terms, unprompted, hit differently. It's a reminder that reputation is built in the aggregate, one decision, one leader, one conversation at a time, and that sometimes it takes an outside perspective to see clearly what you're too close to notice yourself. It's no secret that trust between longtime allies has been tested lately, and the world is watching closely to see how it's handled. I am a proud Canadian, and I trust in the history between our two great nations to come together again, and rebuild a relationship that so many around the world have long admired as an example of what real partnership in trade looks like. 🇨🇦

Jean-Guy Faubert shared this**Honouring a Trailblazer: My Mom** This week my mother, Dolores McGrath Faubert …Dolly as she was known, was honoured at the Iroquois Falls Museum. Seeing her photo there stopped me in my tracks. In the 1970s, in a small northern Ontario town, in an industry run almost entirely by men, she ran an empire. Two gas stations. A car wash. A tow trucking company. A full service center. A concession with a team of employees who counted on her every day. She wore that Texaco uniform with pride when women simply weren't expected to be there, let alone lead it. She gave me my first business lesson too. As a kid, she let me run a minnow and worm stand at one of her gas stations. She held me to real standards. Consistent quality. Fair pricing. No free pass for being her son. I didn't know it then, but that was the beginning of everything. I've spent my career building and scaling companies, leading through four exits, helping SaaS businesses grow. Every bit of discipline and drive I bring to that work traces back to watching her run five businesses at once with grit and precision. Mom, I am endlessly proud to be your son. Jean-Guy Faubert liked thisJean-Guy Faubert liked thisNikki Sayer (Cobb) FICS, Managing Director of Casper Customs, was in our London office this week and told me a story that reaches across AI and human in the loop value. A major renewables project is bringing an entire power plant into the UK, component by component. Normally every one of those components needs its own 10-digit commodity code, and contractors would spend thousands of hours working them out. Casper's consulting team secured HMRC authorisation to classify the whole plant under a single code, imported as split consignments. That code is duty free and carries neither a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) charge nor the additional steel tariffs. This results in thousands of hours saved, millions of pounds in duty, CBAM charges and potential steel tariffs avoided, and a much quicker import process for everyone on the project. Casper has always been obsessed with technology, but only ever as a way to do the work better for their customers, not just faster. Their consulting team works the way the best forward-deployed engineering teams do, sit with the customer, understand the real problem, and fix it properly (and not always with more software but with an understanding of the domain). We go back a long way. Casper Shipping Limited was Sedna Email's sixth customer and our first in Europe. Flytta (Acquired By Sedna) started life inside Casper, built for the post-Brexit customs workload Nikki's team was facing. We acquired it 18 months ago, and it has since grown into a much bigger part of Sedna AI, pulling operational and trade data out of email and documents across maritime segments into customs platforms, shipping execution systems, commodity trading and risk systems, and ERPs. Sedna AI can read a packing list and prepare a declaration in seconds. It took Nikki and her team to see that one code could cover an entire power plant. Our software takes the volume. Their people bring the judgement. There is also important work ahead. While my initial priority during this onboarding period will be listening and learning to better understand lululemon’s product, brand, and culture, my focus from day one is to build on what makes lululemon special while raising the bar for what comes next. Great to see existing customers and catch up with a few industry veterans. As always, a useful read on where market momentum and priorities sit. Cobelfret NV (we’re working closely with Svetoslav Todorov and his team) are leaning into AI in a serious way, and it formed a topic of conversation across the many folks from the industry I chatted with-namely what is a genuine impact it can have day to day. I was reminded again of Alex Crooks observation that LLM powered workflows are the first tech we’ve seen in shipping that can be faster than email or WhatsApp. It’s a game changer. While I was away, Julie Kobbernagel visited our London HQ. She sat exactly where she should. My desk. Julie and I worked together for years when she was at DS NORDEN. She's now Business Application Lead at Clipper Bulk, a customer of ours from nearly day one and innovative from the start. Julie has reinvigorated that relationship, and we're now working on a wide range of new initiatives together. Some on the Sedna side. Some combining work Clipper was already doing with Bridge Labs, now that team is part of Sedna. Clipper are pushing hard on AI, and we're glad to be pushing with them. I like this photo a lot. More than anything, we want customers to feel in charge of what we build. We've grown a great deal over the last couple of years, the focus drifted at times. It's back. His prompt intervention helped prevent the situation from developing into a more serious incident. Shell’s Goal Zero Hero programme recognises individuals who have the courage to intervene when they identify unsafe work conditions and hazards, supporting the objective of achieving no harm and leaks. "Seamless" is the most overused word in logistics tech. It usually means: seamless for the vendor's reference customer, running the same ERP version, using the same modules, on the same hosting environment, with an IT team that had six months of runway. Before you sign, ask these questions: Who built the connector - the vendor or a consultant? Consultants move on. Vendors maintain. What happens when your TMS upgrades? Does the integration break, or does it update automatically? Can you see a live example in a real environment, built from scratch in front of you? Who owns the integration when something goes wrong at 11pm on a Thursday? The answers tell you more about the real cost of the integration than anything in the proposal.

We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame. Late last evening I instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what the U.S. has offered, and we will not give what they have asked. Canada will match the U.S.’ new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses. We take this step confident that it is in the best interests of Canada. In the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labour Day.
