Big momentum for women-led innovation in Canada 🇨🇦 The DMZ Women Innovation Summit 2026 awarded $210K+ in funding to standout startups across AI, healthtech, and emerging sectors highlighting where the future of innovation is heading. July Health, a virtual reproductive health clinic providing early diagnosis and preventative care, received $100,000 in investment commitments. Knead Tech-Technologies, an all-in-one platform that helps organizations reduce food waste, received $50,000 in investment commitments. ClassClown, a voice-based AI learning platform that delivers personalized learning at scale, received $50,000 in investment commitments. Isabelle Hudon, President and CEO of BDC, presented a $10,000 grant to Haibu Health  named the most courageous company of the event, a reflection of one of BDC's core values. Startup Visa Issue Delays of multiple years are fundamentally incompatible with the nature of early-stage entrepreneurship. This ineffective system: -Jeopardizes years of founder effort and R&D -Disrupts investor timelines and capital allocation -Damages Canada’s reputation as a global innovation leader -Discourages future founders from choosing Canada Start-ups cannot simply pick up where they left off after years of stagnation. Otto is Framework Venture Partners AI powered data collection, scoring and matching service. Otto’s data corroborated Leaders Fund work. Startups in the software space in Canada peaked in 2018 at just under an estimated 20,000. As of the beginning of 2025 Otto estimates that number is below 10,000. While there is a rebound from the nadir, it is clear Canadian startups have had nearly a decade of decline. https://lnkd.in/g39A2Fqw

Good article below featuring a new report from National Angel Capital Organization (NACO) and Startup Genome which shows the need for more early-stage venture capital funding in Canada. The release of this report follows a 500+ person event last week to discuss the state of the Canadian tech ecosystem. I spoke on a panel (with Sandi Gilbert and Solon Angel) about the need to invest in Canada's highest potential, early-stage tech companies. "Janet Bannister, founder and managing partner at Staircase Ventures, argued Canada must improve early-stage fundraising to boost its economic productivity. “Our economy is heavily weighted toward natural resources, and not strongly enough towards technology,” Bannister said at the roundtable. “We need to fix that.”" https://lnkd.in/gm2gc7rb

GrowWise Partners is Reshaping How Canadian Companies Access SR&ED Funding “Traditionally, founders and technical teams spend an entire year building and experimenting, and then months later are asked to reconstruct what happened,” said Co-Founder & Managing Partner Lauren Valliere. “We built GrowWise around a different idea: what if SR&ED took 10 minutes a month instead of 30+ hours at year-end?” “SR&ED traditionally becomes a major project once a year.
