In the second book Daenerys is leading a Khalassar of her own. Because she is not Dothraki part of her credibility is established by her marriage. Her power, though, comes from being the mother of dragons. She is, herself a dragon and not the maiden of the story, even though she is only 14. She is leading an entire group of people (and eventually warring) at a very young age. She is precocious in her intelligence and authority.

On page 489 Daenerys demonstrates her strength in a ritual performed by expectant mothers. She is pregnant, at 14, in this scene. Here she is claiming her dragon heritage as she tears into the raw heart of a stallion. She has appropriated the power of dragons for herself and uses it. She is no longer an ordinary maiden, but a strong woman. She is no longer a virgin, she has the "strength" of a dragon and she stands up to male authority (her brother).
