International Dot Day Lesson Plan - International Dot Day, a celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration. THE DOT, by Peter Reynolds, 2003 This lesson plan celebrates International Dot Day with a student art exhibition based on the color study Farbstudie Quadrate, by the French Expressionist, Wassily Kandinsky, well known for his color theory. a woman sitting on top of a floor covered in lots of colorful paper flowers and circles

In my last blog post, I shared that my students were spending a couple of days rotating between four different art makin' stations. We spent two days doing that and ended up with a TON of dots! We are now assembling our dots in a large collage on 18"X24" inch paper. Here is the video I created to walk them through assembling their work: I love how they all turned out and the kids loved all the different stations they rotated to. You can check out the three videos I made of art makin' centers…

colorful paper plates with designs on them

Last week, 3rd grade celebrated National Dot Day, by creating their own dot paintings! The Dot, is a book written by Peter Reynolds, and is about a young girl who's frustrated in art class, and says she can't draw. Her teacher says, "Make a dot, and see where it takes you." The student does, and realizes that she is capable of making great art, all she had to do was try! Here's how we create our own! Day 1: Watched the book, "The Dot", on Youtube, and discussed the message this story is…

The start of the school year is my favorite time to read and celebrate the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Not only does it teach our students that everyone is an artist and how to embrace a growth mindset but...Dot Day is a celebration of JUST THAT and it takes place every year on September 15th. Perfect timing! I have kicked the school year off with MANY different Dot Day art lessons and I thought I would pile them all into one big blog post just for you. From simple one-day lessons to…

a colorful plate is shown on a yellow surface with an abstract design in the center

Last week, 5th Grade started their Foil Pattern Dots, inspired by the book, The Dot! September 15th was National Dot Day, and we celebrated by making these fun, foil "dots" inspired yet again by the fabulous Cassie Stephens! The main tag line of The Dot is, "Make a mark and see where it takes you." Sometimes that can be a hard thing to do, but if you never try, you'll never know what you're capable of! Here's how we created ours! We started off with a cardboard circle, put glue all over the…

three different colored cards with the word dot on them and some other art work items

Hey, y'all! Just thought I'd pop in and offer up this Dot Day activity sheet I created for my students. I was out last week and created this activity for my students to use with the sub. If you'd like this free downloadable PDF, then here you go! When I write lesson plans, I try really hard for my sub to do the same lesson with ALL of my students, kindergarten through fourth. This makes my sub's life so much easier and that's my ultimate goal. I have a TON of sub plan videos on my YouTube…
