In way of a small tribute to the dreaded day I am presenting a quick render of the polar bear skull scanned while we where at the University of Alaska Museum of the North. This guy was large enough to give you some really bad luck had he crossed your path! The skull measures just over 39 cm (15.4 inches) long. #ivl3d

I wanted to share this photo for #skullsundays as it kinda makes me laugh you wouldn't expect a sea lion to make a polar bear look small but this male South American sea lion manages to do that! I can't get over how solid and chunky these male sea lion skulls can be. Both awesome skulls and both considered marine mammals (two of the few marine mammal species it is legal for me to own) I love both skulls a lot! The skull and cervical vertebrae of this polar bear (Ursus maritimus, OUVC 9566) derive from a 26-year-old captive female from the Toledo Zoo who died of natural causes and was donated to Ohio University in the late 1980s where it was skeletonized. It was CT scanned in February 2013 at OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital. The original CT scan data can be freely downloaded on MorphoSource: http://bit.ly/2RlykG8.
