The document summarizes Darwin's theory of natural selection. It explains the key factors of Darwinism: rapid multiplication of organisms, limited environmental resources causing competition, variation between individuals, and survival and inheritance of beneficial traits. Through this process of natural selection over generations, species gradually change and new species may form as variations accumulate. The theory helped explain the evolution of species and adaptation to the environment…

In the following diagram, we see Divergent Evolution (Wolf transforming to Fox and Domestic Dog) and Convergent Evolution where species do not have any common winged ancestors, like Bird, Butterfly, and Bat. In simpler words, Divergent evolution refers to the process by which interbreeding species diverged into two or more evolutionary groups. Whereas, Convergent evolution is when different organisms independently evolve similar traits. A good example of convergent evolution is the…

NATURAL SELECTION Not all offspring survive to become adults. Those with favourable variations, such as long, thick fur in a cold environment, are more likely to survive than those without. This effect of different characteristics on survival is what the scientist Charles Darwin called natural selection. Natural selection is a cause of evolution but it is not the only cause.
Evolution is the process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient ancestors. Evolution is responsible for both the remarkable similarities we see across all life and the amazing diversity of that life—but exactly how does it work? Fundamental to the process is genetic variation upon which selective forces can act in order for evolution to occur. This section examines the mechanisms of evolution focusing on:

These five activities help students understand the complex processes explained by the theory of evolution.
What is evolution? Evolution = is the process by which populations of living things change over a series of generations Evolution is slow and refers to gradual changes that occur within populations of organisms Evolution does not refer to individual change or development
