Reindeer Hooves pause... I used to hear them on the roof every year, and see the glow of a single red light reflect off the snow on the huge spruce outside my window. My older sister always seemed to have gone for a walk at the time. Gee, ;) I wonder why she always missed it....

The Svalbard Reindeer is the second smallest reindeer alive. This large male found us quite interesting as we were photographing arctic fox kits. While we were concentrating on the kits he and his partner slowly grazed their way towards us. Eventually I looked up and was surprised to see them so close. Reindeer have a unique mechanism in their eyes to cope with the long dark nights of winter: during the period of darkness, their eyes change from gold to blue. The blue eyes see less clearly, but they are a thousand times more sensitive to light. The color change occurs not on the iris, but on the tapetum lucidum, a reflective surface behind the central retina.
