people getting mad at ao3 for rightfully being firmly against censorship and allowing dark fics that depict taboo subjects in explicit details to be on their platform is so funny to me because ao3 was created specifically to be a fuck you to capitalism and censorship. the point of ao3 is that it’s a place to host and archive any fanwork, which includes fanwork about taboo topics that are not allowed on other platforms like wattpad or fanfiction.net

the whole point of ao3 is that it’s a safe space for all fics, and that includes fics about taboo subjects

ao3 has always been firmly against censorship since the day it was created, that’s why it’s run by fans, for fans, on fans’ donations, why it’s a nonprofit organization, that’s also why it has no ads or algorithms or any of those capitalism bullshit

if you have a problem with that, go to fanfiction.net or wattpad. no one forces you to stay in the house made specifically for the (affectionate) freaks

ao3 fanfiction.net goodness gracious i entered twitter this month and only few hours I've already read the worst of antis discourses i'm no proship but i will be one next if the antis say all ao3 readers are pedophiles and rapists bc ao3 allows noncon or underage sex the people there are trying to boycott ao3 mods bc some ppl said rpf of real life kids is there and i was understanding and thinking do these ppl like at least report the author who made abt real kids they did and ao3 didn't do anything; they said; then i thought why don't you just block the fic if you don't wanna see it and then their threads sound more and more subjective; “it's celeb kids; popular singers; etc.” instead of regular kids i found out they were talking about fics of finn wolfhard during stranger things peak. bitch wattpad made more wild fics of stranger things antis talk like fucking trump supporter middle age parents who let their ipad kids roam around internet and read news from facebook ai post but these are mostly teens-20 something year olds oh my god 😭😭

Anonymous asked:

Get thee to a vpn immediately, before they ban those as well. One on every device you use. I like Proton, for example. Ao3 is extremely low load, so a free version will be completely sufficient for it. If you use a desktop computer, download Tor browser as well and learn how to use it, just to be on the safe side. Governments are shitty, but you don’t have to take it lying down. ✊🏽

omg thank you sm anon!!! and I FORGOT TOR EXISTS 😭

i swear indo fic writers, indo queers, anime lovers, bl/gl lovers (some of them are pioneers of the best ao3 fics and artists i know of lots of bl/gl stuff) i know of actually said we could use wayback machine (archive.org) for all ao3 fics too but the point is they are also protesting how my country is so bigoted and ignorant that they focus on “dangerous lgbt contents corrupting our children with SEX and LUTH SODOM !!! 😡” while our country’s corruption is still high, let alone our new prez 😭💔

not that my country hasn't had history of corrupt presidents before but this ban on very non issue thing like ao3 and lgbt contents on social media is fucking idiotic ao3 anon

just remembered a fic on AO3 (or more likely LJ because it had that distinct late 00's experimental vibe) that appeared double-spaced oddly, in that some paragraphs would be spaced normally and others would have double or even triple spaces in between. it was about one half of the otp getting over the other's death (or coma, can't remember which), so all the comments were about how poignant the use of visual spacing was as a means to convey all the emotional holes in the character's life.

and then the author replied like... *giggle* guys it's NOT double spaced. try selecting the whole text

and we were all like "no WAY"

but we selected the text, and yes!!!

the "holes" in the story? they were actually lines and actions from the dead/coma character's ghost, rendered invisible to the eye by the simple trick of coloring the text the exact same as the background, revealed by nothing more than a click and a drag of the mouse

a story about the profound loneliness of losing your the partner of your life and having to make do without them, without anything to fill the holes they'd left behind, suddenly became a story about the profound helplessness of seeing someone you love suffer from your absence while you are right there, unable to do anything about it, unable to communicate that you love them enough to suffer unseen and unheard with them, just to keep them company they'll never know about

it was then that I truly realized how *superior* the digital medium is to plain printed paper, how the medium and the format can add to a story.

I think about that fic about once a year. I wish I could find it again

EDIT: FOUND IT!!!! UPDATE HERE

ao3 Sherlock somebody tell me if this has already been a popularized thing I mean the type of formatting and writing style of this fic so I can find it later or make one or beg people to make it But it must've been so goddamn good when you discover the feature by yourself as well like an Easter egg

No More Zero Comments Project

Hi! Here's a big masterpost for everything you need to know about this project!

The No More Zero Comments (NM0C) Project is dedicated to reducing the number of fics on AO3 with no comments. This is a multifandom community effort with very few rules which you can very easily undertake alone, but hey, why not join us?

The goal is simple: find fics with no comments, read them and leave the author a comment. If you want, you can go out and find fics on your own, but we also have a handy spreadsheet full of fics for you to browse!

You can find the spreadsheet here. There are tonnes of different fandoms to choose from. It will be updated regularly with new fics, so check back as often as you like.

Do you have a fic with zero comments? You can submit it here to be added to the spreadsheet. There is no limit to how many you can submit, and no limits on what you can submit. Any fandom, any category, any rating, no matter how old it is. Yes, even explicit fics. We aren't picky around here. You can also submit other people's fics if you wish.

All I ask is, if you submit your own fics, try and comment on some too! Balance, equality, etc.

The only real rule for submissions is no AI. This blog is vehemently anti-AI and will not accept any fics that use it. EDIT 16/06/25: There are now two more rules - no Harry Potter fics (fuck jkr) and no fics less than a week old.

If you comment on a fic from the spreadsheet, please let me know here so I can remove the fic from the spreadsheet. If you see a fic on the spreadsheet that has a comment, don't fret. I'll get around to removing it soon. Admin's timezone is GMT and I'm most active in the evenings.

Have a question? Feel free to ask!

A few more bits and pieces of information under the cut!

Get the (y/n) extension for browsers (Replacer Bookmarklet) by ElectricAlice on AO3 and change the y/n into anything other than yourself if the fic is written in third person. They got instructions fully written and easy to do, and it works on mobile, too. Unfortunately, I tried on some fics that have unmatching format of y/n's on some lines (i.e., paragraph 1 has "(y/n)" with parentheses, paragraph 2 has "[y/n]" with brackets, then some other lines have "(y/n]" or completely unproofread typos) and it didn't work for those fics. But other than that, other fics work and you can change the names.

Glowy dark mode site skin

Screenshot of the AO3 homepage. The header has a picture of a dark forest at night with green mist and hundreds of glowing fireflies. The site's background is almost-black. Text is a pale yellow. Pale yellow glow effects have been applied throughout.ALT
Screenshot of a work blurb. Archive Warnings have a glowy yellow background. Relationship tags are bright yellow and bolded. The footer is a medium green with the same pale yellow text as elsewhere. Buttons are a matching medium green with glow effect behind them.ALT
Screenshot of the Fandoms page. The box around each fandom list is the same pale yellow with glow effect as elsewhere.ALT
The Work Search page. The background of the page is almost-black and each element has a glow effect.ALT
The Filters Sidebar has an almost-black background and pale yellow text. Most of the text has been bolded.ALT
A sample work to show the readability of the yellow text on the almost-black background.ALT

🎼 You would not believe your eyes, if 10 million fireflies ended up in the header of your AO3. 🎶

It's been a while since I tried glow effects, but I saw the fireflies and I couldn't resist.

I'm working on another site skin, and in doing so I figured out a much easier way to recolour the icon set at the top corner of fic blurbs (the 4 icons that show status and ratings etc?)

Closeup of the top left corner of a fic blurb. The icons shown are Mature, Gen, Major Character Death, and Work in Progress. All of the icons are in shades of green. The rest of the image is in the same aesthetic as above.ALT

While I was updating this skin for that feature, I also went in and changed it so that links in the fic blurb's header get darker after you've clicked on them (so you know if you've clicked into a fic before). I changed the link hover background colour to the light green of this skin instead of the red of the default skin. I also updated the colouring on the stats chart on the Statistics page.

All updates have been made on the github link above. If you don't want those changes, then you can ignore this.

just a heads up to my fellow writers out there that AO3 is currently fighting off bots commenting on people’s works to tell them that AO3 will delete their fics “due to the works being deprecated”, and the deletion will affect their accounts unless the authors delete the fics themselves first. IT IS A SCAM. AO3 will NOT delete your works. please do NOT fall for these bots!

I’ve been told the reason why these bots are doing this is due to copyright infringement issue where they’re trying to steal your works (possibly to train AI but this is just a guess) ‼️‼️‼️and once you deleted your fics, it will be either very difficult or impossible for you to claim ownership of your own fics when they were already deleted.‼️‼️‼️

a reminder that AO3 will never contact you through your comments section (in case they claim to be one of the moderators). AO3 will only contact you through your email address which you use to register your account, and it will be from AO3’s official handle. not some sketchy ass @

so if you get a comment telling you you should “delete your works to protect your account because AO3 is doing blah blah blah” report that comment. don’t delete your works.

PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THESE SCAM.

AO3 IS NOT DELETING WORKS.

DO NOT DELETE YOUR WORKS JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE CLAIMS THEY KNOW SOMETHING.

THIS IS NOT REAL. If you get this comment, they’re just trying to get you to delete your fic.

1) I would have gotten some kind of email from Ao3 if this was true

2) this comment is formatted to be perfect to tack onto any fic they choose

3) ALSO why on earth would Ao3 get rid of entire fandoms off the site? Even if they WERE inactive? Who knows if others will be ‘late’ to the fandom and want some fic to read. Who knows if someone wants to come back to their 6 year old account only to find most of their fics deleted.

I’m lucky to be a reasonable adult who has seen tricks like these who also had a very kind person comment their own doubts.

Please let your Ao3 friends know <3
