AFRO MODERNISM
16.09.16 : Enigma Art Collective in collaboration with Retro Africa
Retro Africa, in collaboration with Enigma.Art Collective, presents “Afro Modernism”. The concept behind this exhibition was triggered by a need to express Africa in a modern context, on Canvas and other mediums. Placing no limitations on defining the Modern or on our understanding of the African, our Exhibition is comprised of an eclectic mix of stylistic categorizations. This collections seeks to transcend its title in questioning the inspiration and drive behind the Contemporary African artist today. From the abstract to the realist, we aim to either delineate or shatter the boundary between the Traditional and contemporary styles.
Retro Africa was created as a community of art enthusiasts, curators and collectors. In this we were able to establish a creative alliance with Enigma Art Collective, who share the same enthusiasm and similar ethos in our approach to Art. Retro Africa provides a platform for emerging and established African Artists through a range of creative outlets such as Pop-up exhibitions, Art Fairs, intercultural dialogues and our online medium. Our aim is to spread awareness and encourage a cycle of growth and learning within the African art scene.

COLOUR.ISM
29.04.16 : Enigma Art Collective
Art . Literature . Video . Photography
The meaning of COLOUR.ISM is the discrimination of human beings based on their skin colour and pigment. This exhibition looks at the lives of those human beings in our society who live without skin pigmentation, Albinos. COLOUR.ISM evolved from a thirst to give a voice to the dismissed, presenting a stage for dialogue. By focusing our creative energy on moulding a social commentary with our audience, we gave this exhibition the content to create an emotional and ethereal experience.

Speaking of Man

Visual collaboration of fine art Photography and Painting by Domitilla Modesti and Khenye Gager.
In Aristotle the meaning of Anthropology is the 'SPEAKING OF MAN’.The exhibition is an anthropological study of humans as it explores the fascinating connections we have with people and space. This project uncovers the cultures of the world around us and the phenomenon of people that is west Africa. This collection of paintings and photography were compiled to depict the various aesthetic dimensions that connects us as people and to west Africa and its culture. The exhibitions aims to allow the viewer an opportunity to see the world through our eyes and aims to recreate the connection we have with the people around us . This experiences is a visual anthropological study which captures the nature and the essence of humankind, the colours , textures and people that makes west Africa so unique to the world.
The colours, texture and composition captured within the images aim to recreate this discordance and harmony between an individual and their surroundings. This lack of harmony within the images aims to highlight the feelings of desperation as they embody the poets personal experience. This juxtaposition often makes the individual appear strange and out of place as they hover looking on their abstracted reality and landscapes.
