We present a novel single-photon detector based on a vacuum tube incorporating a photocathode, a microchannel plate (MCP), and a Timepix4 CMOS ASIC functioning as a pixelated anode. Designed to handle photon rates up to 1 billion per second across a $7$ $\text{cm}^2$ active area, the detector achieves outstanding spatial and temporal resolutions of $5 - 10$ $\mu\text{m}$ and below $50$ $\text{ps}$ r.m.s., respectively. Probability distribution maps of deposited energy with sub-pixel resolution for Timepix3 detectors / Christodoulou, Pinelopi (CERN ; CTU, Prague) ; Alozy, Jerome (CERN) ; Ballabriga, Rafael (CERN) ; Campbell, Michael (CERN) ; Heijne, Erik (CERN ; CTU, Prague) ; Llopart, Xavier (CERN) ; Pulli, Adithya (CERN) ; Sriskaran, Viros (CERN) ; Tlustos, Lukas (CERN ; CTU, Prague) ; Zemlicka, Jan (CTU, Prague)
The Medipix3 Collaboration has developed the Timepix3 chip, which can provide information about individual particles interacting with a hybrid pixelated semiconductor detector. The Timepix3 generates a data packet including time and energy information for each pixel receiving a charge above the discriminator threshold. From a set of such packages generated by one particle the total deposited energy and the sub-pixel center of mass (c.m) position of the interaction can be calculated. [...]

A Sensor Employing an Array of Silicon Photomultipliers for Detection of keV Ions in Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry / Mariscal-Castilla, Antonio (Barcelona U.) ; Piller, Markus (CERN) ; Alozy, Jerome (CERN) ; Ballabriga, Rafael (CERN) ; Campbell, Michael (CERN) ; de la Torre, Oscar (Barcelona U.) ; Gascón, David (Barcelona U.) ; Gómez, Sergio (Barcelona, Polytechnic U.) ; Heathcote, David (Oxford U.) ; Mauricio, Joan (Barcelona U.) et al.
Pixellated scintillation detectors have the potential to overcome several limitations of conventional microchannel-plate-based detectors employed in time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ToF-MS), such as extending detector lifetime, reducing vacuum requirements, or increasing the ion throughput. We have developed a prototype comprising a fast organic scintillator (Exalite 404) coupled to an array of 16 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), with read-out electronics based on the FastIC application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Integration of the FastIC front-end electronics into the Picosec MicroMegas detector / Scharenberg, L (CERN) ; Alozy, J (CERN) ; Angelis, Y (Aristotle U., Thessaloniki) ; Aune, S (IRFU, Saclay) ; Ballabriga, R (CERN) ; Bortfeldt, J (Munich U.) ; Brunbauer, F (CERN) ; Brunoldi, M (Pavia U. ; INFN, Pavia) ; Campbell, M (CERN) ; Datta, J (SUNY, Stony Brook) et al.
The Picosec MicroMegas collaboration aims to develop gaseous fast-timing detectors; experimentally, intrinsic time resolutions from around 50ps to better than 20ps are obtained, depending on the exact detector configuration. Parts of developments focus on exploring various options of fast-timing multi-channel front-end electronics, to meet the data processing demands of experimental applications. [...]

The combination of Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs) and pixel charge readout enables specific experimental opportunities. Using the Timepix4 for the readout is advantageous because of its size (around 7 cm^2 active area) and its Through Silicon Vias. [...]

Combining gaseous detectors with a high-granularity pixelated charge readout enables experimental applications which otherwise could not be achieved. This includes high-resolution tracking of low-energetic particles, requiring ultra-low material budget, X-ray polarimetry at low energies ($\lessapprox$ 2 keV) or rare-event searches which profit from event selection based on geometrical parameters.
