A British or Gallic chieftain (350-50 BC) dressed in the Celtic La Tène style. The chieftain is carrying a bronze coated wooden shield like the Battersea Shield (dredged from the bed of the Thames in 1857). His helmet is like the Waterloo helmet - also discovered in the Thames (1868). The La Tène culture was the first solidly 'Celtic' culture - originating in Central Europe (France), and spreading to the isles. In England it was later supplanted by Roman, then Anglo-Saxon (germanic) culture. -DK
