You can make a gorgeous piece of functional pottery but if it isn’t food safe… yikes😬 These tests make sure that the chemicals in your glaze are stable, making them food safe. If the glaze discolors or looses its shine in anyway then your glaze is “leaching.” Which makes it unsafe for functional use. If you have a piece that fails the test please label the bottom with a sharpie “not food safe” and find another function for it. Planter, vase, decor etc… You can still serve dry foods like crackers, chips, popcorn etc. but nothing with moisture.

P.S. If you’re a potter and are realizing you need to test your glazes please check out “Digital Fire” online. It’s a great resource!" Food Safe Clay, Practical Knowledge, Glaze Combos, Advanced Ceramics, Ceramic Techniques, Ceramic Ideas, Functional Pottery, Pottery Studio, My Job
