several cups and bowls with a single pink flower in the middle one sitting on top of each other

What a week, I’d forgotten what a full five days of throwing and trimming felt like, it’s tiring, but a good tiring, if that’s makes sense? I’m fulfilled, progress has been made and my technique is better. I’ve tried to be more aggressive with my turning to speed things up and after a few near misses I’m ploughing throw my latest batch of angular bowls, (see the second image for a shot of the cluttered workbenches). I’ve still been filming and doing the multitude of odd jobs there always…

a person holding a small object in their hands

Another mug with an alternative base, thrown with a thicker bottom initially and then trimmed back at the leather hard stage. It isn’t anything extraordinary, far from it in fact, you’ll find dinner plates with bases turned like this, the central portion left mostly untouched to ‘catch’ the expanse of clay as it sags, preventing the vessel from distorting and potentially fusing to the kiln shelf. Not that this mug’s base will sag, it’s too narrow, but the button provides a good surface to be…

two wooden bowls sitting on top of a table

A trio of natural Oak vessels with subtly matched waxed cotton stitch-work, sandblasted then finished with a micro-crystalline wax and burnished before mending. Crafted for the ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’ group exhibition opening today, Thursday 11th July at @maudandmabellondon through to 27th July. We’ve loved crafting these works in a natural Oak finish. It allows the beauty of the material to shine through and for the elegance of the form to take focus. From Left To Right: #08 - Etrusca...

many brown vases are lined up on a table

My trimming setup today, there’s 40 curved bowls to turn into more angular shapes, a needy dog sleeping under my feet and an audiobook belting from my speakers to drown out the sound of wind and rain overhead. It’s repetitive work, but I enjoy the challenge these bowls present with their exceptionally deep feet, (see the second picture in today’s post), in fact, days like this might be my favourite as trimming pots is my most-liked activity in the studio these days. Tomorrow, I’ll be…
