Murgese stallion, Adone. From southern Italy; the Murgese was developed in the Baroque era by crossing the highly influential, extinct Neapolitan with Barb and Arabian. The Neapolitan itself, rich with Andalusian influence, was also a major foundation of Lipizzaners. Once popular, the Murgese later almost went extinct. Reconstructed in the early 20th century, it is little known outside its region and has a small population, but is rigorously maintained. photo: Valeria Bonelli.
