About Chocolate Chinese Gaming
Welcome to Chocolate Chinese Gaming — learn Chinese through games with comprehensible input.
Learning Chinese is like opening a box of chocolates: every game, story, and episode brings something new. This site is the study companion to the YouTube channel: each lesson matches a real Chinese gameplay or Let’s Play episode with synced subtitles, HSK word and character lists, tap-to-lookup vocabulary, and Anki export.
If textbook dialogues feel too far from the Chinese you actually want to hear, Chocolate Chinese Gaming offers a practical middle path — watch with full visual context, see which HSK words and characters show up, tap to check pinyin and meanings, then export episode vocabulary and character lists to Anki.
How it works
Each lesson matches one YouTube gameplay episode:
- Watch the video with synced Chinese subtitles
- Open the HSK tab to see which words and characters appear, with level breakdowns and frequency lists
- Tap HSK words and characters in the subtitles or coverage lists to see pinyin, English meaning, and HSK level
- Export Anki CSV for each HSK level from the word and character tables
Who this is for
Chocolate Chinese Gaming is built for learners around HSK 3–5 who already enjoy gaming content in Chinese and want a structured way to review vocabulary from those videos. The HSK stats on each lesson help you choose what to watch: you can see the lesson’s estimated level, which HSK words and characters appear, and how often they show up in the subtitles.
The percentages are a guide to the subtitle language, not an exam score. You do not need to catch every word on the first watch. Pick an episode where the topic feels interesting and the HSK level looks manageable, follow the scene first, then come back for word lookup, frequency lists, and Anki review.
About Daniel 大牛
I am Daniel 大牛, a native Chinese speaker from Shandong and a lifelong gamer. I use games as a bridge between textbook Mandarin and the spoken commentary you hear in real videos.
Outside of Chocolate Chinese Gaming, I am a programmer by trade. Building tools, automating workflows, and turning messy real-world data into something useful is a big part of how this site gets made.
Right now I am learning English and Spanish as a learner myself. That keeps me honest about what it feels like to study from media you enjoy, miss words in fast speech, and need subtitles, lookups, and spaced repetition to make progress.
Chocolate Chinese Gaming is my way of sharing the Mandarin side of that journey — real commentary, real games, and study tools I would actually want to use.
Data sources
HSK level tags, word lists, and character lists on this site are based on krmanik/HSK-3.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0). Pinyin and English meanings are reviewed and normalized with GPT-5.5 for learner-facing display on Chocolate Chinese Gaming, using CC-CEDICT as a reference where available (CC BY-SA 4.0).
