Landscape Features and Tar River Trail (Gail Stafford)

Melita is taking a Cyberpointers online class with Gail Stafford entitled "Landscape Features:  A Notebook Class."

It's interesting to see Melita's progress and hear how Gail designed various tree limbs and trunks.

Now we are doing bushes and water.

Next Melita tackled grasses, straw and mulch.  Her observations of what worked and what didn't are interesting.

Melita is also going to finish a Gail Stafford class called "Tar River Trail."  It looks beautiful to me.

Melita's added tree trunks.

She had trouble deciding when to stop but by the end she had a fall piece that looks very like our woods in early October.

New Cyber Project, New Thread UPDATED

Blue Dogwood's new cyber project for Spring 2023 is called "Mountain Vista."  The canvas is their design and will have all sorts of lovely stitches. It also uses a new thread from South Africa--Vinnis Colours Bamboo, which appears to be a knitting yarn skeined for needlepoint.

Here is the finished design.  Lovely!

Here's all I can find about Vinnis Colours Bamboo.  Pretty colors and a nice sheen!

UPDATE:  Deborah in South Africa has lots of information about this thread.

The Art of Petit Point (Learning to Stitch on Silk Gauze)

Does the idea of stitching on silk gauze intrigue you?  Then you may be interested in Natalia Frank's new cyberclass "The Art of Petite Point."  You can see more about the class here.

You can browse Natalia's charts on her regular website.  She also has free charts to use as you explore this tiny ground material.

Basically you do tent stitches with one ply of silk or cotton floss on a ground fabric that ranges from 18 to 32 to 40 to 48 count (and much smaller) using a tiny needle, usually a beading needle.  The silk gauze doesn't have to have the background stitched as the gauze will disappear if it is mounted over a shiny fabric or a mirror.  That means you have to be careful how you end threads as the tails will wiggle out and show if you aren't.  You can of course completely cover the background if you are doing a miniature rug, for example.  But having a butterfly seeming to float in air is a wonderful thing to see.

The Cupcake Nutcracker Class

Suzie Vallerie of The Enriched Stitch is planning a class via Zoom for this Cupcake Nutcracker.  I think (although I'm not certain) that the designer is Susan Roberts.

Personally I find nutcracker canvases creepy (those teeth!) but this one is exceptionally interesting in all the effects Suzie has chosen to bring Mr. Cupcake to life.  You can sign up for the class on the Enriched Stitch website.

Gifts for the New (or Not) Stitcher

It's that time of year when we are racking our brains, trying to find the perfect gift for a stitching friend—or for a brand new stitcher.  I thought I'd assemble a few gift ideas from a couple of shops to make it easy to do mail order.  Remember, the delivery services are overwhelmed so if you don't have a local you can visit, order ASAP.  Already the post office's Priority Mail which normally takes two days is taking six!

First up, you can't stitch without scissors or needles.  How about these cute (and sharp) little pastel scissors?  They are great for a beginner or for a spare pair, or for travel.  These come in pink, lavender and blue but only pink are in stock right now at this shop.

You always need needles.  Bohin needles are wonderful.  Gift your stitching friends an assortment and remind them to keep spares in their wallets.  Size 22 is perfect for 18 count canvas but if your buddy prefers 13 count designs, buy them size 18 or 20.

Many stitchers love magnets to put on their canvas to temporarily park a needle until they need it again.  They come in many styles and sizes, so you can find one that suits anyone.

How about a tote bag for that project canvas, threads and tools?  These come in various sizes and protect your project when you travel.  A bonus is you can easily see which project to grab when you are ready to stitch.

Of course you can gift a friend a stitch dictionary so they always have great stitches to choose from.  Stitches to Go is a classic and it is small enough to go anywhere.  True, it doesn't tell you where to use the stitches, but this little book distills the three volumes of the fabulous Stitches for Effect series into one little volume.

Another great portable choice is Carole Lake's Just in the Knick of Time, a book with both useful stitches and information on how and where to use them.

If you want to spend just a little more, how about you gift someone a fabulous cyberclass to keep them entertained this winter?  There's something to appeal to almost anyone here.

Hope this gives you some good gift ideas, even if it is just for your own wish list.

Shadow Stitching Cyberclass

Registration has just opened this week for Laura Perin's latest cyberclass, "Daylily."  It is a class on shadow stitching, which means light coverage stitching over a design printed on needlepoint canvas.  The printing will show, creating an interesting interplay between the light coverage stitches and the pattern you won't quite cover.

You can sign up for this at Laura's website with a choice of two color ways, making this an interesting way to learn this technique on a small design.

Criss Cross Hungarian Stitch Video

Needlepoint.com has posted a video tutorial on Criss Cross Hungarian Stitch (one of my personal favorites!) on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwY0xoWlAog&_bta_tid=33419163095476411863323762677897252478480436548890047066454568372748392985009019649668454792465558586219&_bta_c=jq56dmv1pa2moalxe2t2makrflkac

This is obviously meant to be part of a class so you are seeing this out of context without a diagram.  Here's one for you to help you understand the stitch better.  In this version, a tent stitch is used instead of a cross stitch.  You can also substitute a bead for a more decorative option.

This video is a promotion for Needlepoint.com's online classes.  They have a huge variety of classes to learn various techniques or just to create some fun projects to stretch your needlepoint skills.

Frank's Bride in Cyberspace

If you are a fan of Halloween canvases, this is one you must see!  This is a Barbara Elmore/Sundance canvas called "Frank's Bride."  It was stitched by Barbara herself and she is going to offer a cyber class on Facebook about it starting August 1st.  You will buy the canvas from your favorite store (Ruth's shop has it on sale) and arrange your own supplies.  Barbara will have an optional lace kit available your shop can order if you don't have lace scraps laying around.
https://bedeckedandbeadazzled.com/2018/05/barbara-elmore-is-offering-a-cyberclass/

If you are interested in unusual embellishment techniques, even if you aren't wild about Halloween themes, this is going to be a fabulous class by an inspired teacher.  You can read more about it on Barbara's Facebook page.

Learn with Lycette's Lessons

Thanks to this note from Horse Country Chic, I've learned that Lycette Designs plans an online How To Needlepoint class via Instagram.
https://horsecountrychic.blogspot.com/2018/05/learn-to-stitch.html

It's geared toward younger folks (hence the postings on Instagram) and will probably just be the basics, but it's a great idea to help people who don't have a stitching friend or shop to show them.  The details will be posted to Jessica's Lycette blog.

The Silken Trinket Box

If you have been drooling over Tricia Nguyen's classes on how to make reproduction 17th Century stumpwork boxes but the prices are a bit more than you can justify, there's good news. Tricia is going to have a class on a smaller and simpler box, done in tent stitches on linen, but using many of the same materials used for the fancier stumpwork boxes and mirrors.  You can read about the kit and class on her Thistle Threads website and on her blog.
http://thistle-threads.myshopify.com/products/silken-trinket-box

http://thistle-threads.blogspot.com/2017/01/join-stitch-along-with-trinket-box.html

But don't dawdle.  There are only 100 box kits available as the linen that covers them is no longer available.

The Needlepoint Wreath UPDATED

Horse Country Chic loves Susan Robert's needlepoint wreaths. They are the essence of spring.
http://horsecountrychic.blogspot.com/2016/02/needlepoint-wreaths.html

Melissa Prince came out with a bunch of wonderful wreathes in January.

These join Melissa's Robin's Wreath which will be a Sandy Arthur mystery class in September 2016 for a full set of seasonal wreaths.
http://www.sandyarthur.blogspot.com/2015/12/online-mystery-class-schedule-2016-i.html

Any of these will make for a delightful stitch and an amazing display when finished.

UPDATE:  Horse Country Chic's wreath is back from the finisher!

Craftsy Does Stumpwork

By now you've probably heard of Craftsy, the online video classroom that teaches various crafts. Mary Corbet has been reviewing their stumpwork class.  She's also reviewed their gold work class and there's a link to that if you want to know more, plus a link to a discount on the stumpwork class if you are interested.  But act fast--the discount is only good through November 17.
