On August 5th, 1945, the US forces dropped the first nuclear weapon onto Japanese citizens. While us Kaiju fans love how long this genre has endured, we can’t forget that its real life origins is based on a truly horrifying event were so much life was lost. When Ishiro Honda, Tomoyuki Tanaka, and Eiji Tsuburaya created the original 1954 Gojira, the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were less than a decade ago at the time and the citizens of Japan were still feeling the horrors of Nuclear weaponry. Ishiro Honda implanted his pacificistic philosophy into the Kaiju Genre across his career to show both the dangers of what mankind can unleash onto to the world, but also how humanity can move past tragedy into a brighter future. While seeing Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman and fellow colossal creatures brawl is always the pinnacle of spectacle, we must not ignore that Kaiju Eiga and the Tokusatsu genre as a whole are human stories dealing forces we can never truly control. So today let’s take the lessons of Godzilla and real human history as we must live with nature, embrace our fellow man, and make sure what happened 74 years ago today is never repeated again.
