English: The Zakros Gorge originates in the Zakros Mountains. Trending eastward it enters the Zakros Basin in the vicinity of Epano or just Ano ("upper") Zakro, where there is a Minoan villa. Crossing the basin, it transits the Coastal Hill Range, where it is known as "gorge of the dead" (certainly not, and nothing like, Death Valley in the US), descending to a small coastal plain, Kato ("lower") Zakro, where the Minoan palace is. Other gorges perform a similar feat, being located in two ranges, crossing the basin, but none so spectacularly as this one.
