Deutsch: „Das Wappen der Stadt zeigt im silbernen Feld, das von einem mit altgoldenen Münzen belegten schwarzen Bord eingefasst ist, zwei schräg gekreuzte Schlüssel mit abgewendeten Bärten, zwischen denen oben ein schwarzes Kreuzchen schwebt.“ Die korrekte Blasonierung lautet:„In Silber (Weiß) mit einem schwarzen, mit elf goldenen (gelben) Kugeln belegten Schildbord, zwei schräggekreuzte schwarze Schlüssel mit abgewendeten Bärten, dazwischen oben ein schwebendes schwarzes Kreuz.“ Xanten besitzt seit 1228 Stadtrechte. Die Schlüssel entstammen den ältesten Stadtsiegeln und symbolisieren die Zugehörigkeit zum Erzstift Köln und dessen Patron, den hl. Petrus; die Kugeln erinnern an den hl. Nikolaus in einem mittelalterlichen Schöffensiegel.
English: „Argent, with a bordure sable, charged with eleven bezants, two crossed keys with bits outwards, between them a pending cross of the second.“ The arms were officially granted in 1911 and again in 1953. Xanten was an important Roman castellum and received city rights in 1228 by the Archbishop of Cologne. The city has used many different seals, the oldest with St. Peter, the patron saint of Cologne, but most with his symbols, the two crossed keys. The two keys appear first in the great seal in 1320. The bordure, which appears in the 16th Century, remembers Saint Nicholas.
