Bonjour.

Merci Vigneron d'avoir corrigé mon erreur. A455bcd9 (talk) 15:05, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
File:Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel de nuit.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Copyright status: File:Camille Mortenol.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Camille Mortenol.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Can you please make the charts on w:List of Wikipedias use the same colors for the same language?
Hey, I noticed that on w:List of Wikipedias blue is used for English in the chart but the map uses red. This makes the charts take slightly more effort to read. It would be nice if the same languages used the same color.
And if I can ask, can you please make Russian red and English blue on the map? That's the color used on the map in w:English language and red is associated with Russia. I can update the articles of all the Wikipedias that use the image, just ping me. Akeosnhaoe (talk) 20:47, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi,
- You're right; it would be amazing if there was a unique color code "one language = one color" in both the map and this graph and that one and the other chart below.
- Unfortunately, the colors in the graphs are automatically set by the tool I use based on the %: first is blue, second is yellow (?), third is green, etc. So red is German in one and French on the other, for instance. So because the two graphs don't even have the same color code it's already impossible to have the same color for the map.
- Even if there were a way to set colors for each language without taking into account the order. But this may be less visible if two similar colors are next to each other.
- The same applies to the map. English should not be (light) blue on the map because French is (dark) blue, and as French and English are next to each other in Africa, it would make the map less readable. Yes, red is associated with Russia, but readability is more important. (and btw red is also associated with England and China, and blue is on the Russian flag).
- I struggled to choose the colors on this map and I think in the current version they are clearly distinguishable, even for color blind people like me :) I'm not sure any other configuration would be significantly better.
- (by the way, there's also this map)
- A455bcd9 (talk) 21:03, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
- Yea, I knew someone could say that red is also China, but I checked and that on w:Chinese language uses green, just like your map so I didn't bother mentioning it. I feel like there should to be a way to configure which color gets used by the tool (which tool?), or worst case we could use a quick script to change the colors in the output SVG or something, but it's kind of a lot of work I guess. Akeosnhaoe (talk) 03:27, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi,
- I used this code to generate maps and graphs. For graphs, it uses this library. As far as I know, this library doesn't allow users to change colors, and it outputs images in PNG and not in SVG. So yes, it would probably be a lot of work. But more than the amount of work I think it would be useless. What's important is that the map and graphs are easily readable by anyone, including color-blind people, or people who would print them in black and white. To do so we need to have colors different enough to be clearly distinguished when next to each other (either on the graphs or on the map). I think the current versions (of both the map and the graph) fulfills this goal and that your proposal does not. But if you want you can upload images with your suggestions (for map(s) and/or graph(s)) and we'll see if they're are better. Best, A455bcd9 (talk) 09:08, 23 May 2021 (UTC) A455bcd9 (talk) 09:08, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

- Hi @S100500S,
- I sometimes check the data and it's always essentially the same thing so I don't take the time to update it.
- English is by far the most popular edition in Mongolia as you can see here (2M) and there (~150k).
- Conclusion: no need to update anything imho.
- Cheers, A455bcd9 (talk) 07:16, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Israel Hebrew Proficiency 1948.png.
Thank you. |

My source for the Russian part was "Juttele eestis tai suomeks daze ryssäki käyb", which is an article. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 11:15, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @ValtteriLahti12: please add all the sources in the description. But the sources you added before for Finland and Sweden didn't match exactly with the map, so I don't understand. A455bcd9 (talk) 11:16, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
- The area in which Meänkieli is spoken has expanded due to immigration, Sweden has in recent years granted official status to Meänkieli in a few more areas such as Umeå. The source for Meänkieli mentioned it. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 11:18, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
- The source you mentioned says: "I Sverige talas meänkieli främst i kommunerna Gällivare, Haparanda, Pajala, Kiruna och Övertorneå." but "Kiruna" isn't colored on your map.
- So is your map based on a source (in this case: which one)? Or on your own knowledge (in this case: the "Original research" tag should be kept)? A455bcd9 (talk) 11:25, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
- The spread of Meänkieli is based off https://www.isof.se/lar-dig-mer/kunskapsbanker/lar-dig-mer-om-nationella-minoritetssprak/meankieli, as it is the most up to date, Meänkieli was made official in Umeå only in about 2020. --ValtteriLahti12 (talk) 11:31, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

Stop!
Please stop adding {{No source since}} and other templates to files that have a source. I reverted a couples of edits, but I cannot check them all. please double check before adding anything to a file page. Thanks Ruthven (msg) 13:06, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Ruthven: sorry if I made a mistake, I'll double-check my edits and revert them.
- But before I'd like to be sure I understand things correctly:
- For instance for File:Idioma kannada.png the source says "Own work". However, according to the English Wikipedia, the source of this map is Schwartzberg, Joseph E. (1978). "Currency of Selected Languages and Scripts". A Historical Atlas of South Asia. University of Chicago Press. p. 102. ISBN 978-0195068696.. The author of that file didn't wake up one day and suddenly found the distribution of Kannada speakers, they must have used another source (at least for the background map): potentially another map protected by copyright, or data from a pay-walled website for example. That's why I added {{No source since}} out of precaution. Was I wrong?
- I also added {{Datasource missing}} as it is intended "for own diagrams and maps visualizing data that needs references" "to show when the source field in {{Information}} is lacking datasource (reference to visualized facts), for diagrams, maps, etc that are own works". I think it's still relevant for File:BMAC.png for instance, which has no source at all regarding the facts that are represented. (btw, there's no source for the background map either).
- I also added {{Original research}} which is "generally for files where the description or depiction needs references". (I realize now that it's most likely the same thing as {{Datasource missing}} but for things other than diagrams and maps?).
- Thanks for any help you can provide.
- Cheers, A455bcd9 (talk) 15:15, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
- For File:Idioma kannada.png the source says "Own work", because very probably the user added the blue area In fact, the map is a very classical localization map used on Commons derived from Blank map of the Indian subcontinent.svg. If you want to delete a file used on many projects because the underlying map is not cited, it's a vandalism, because it's a behaviour that creates prejudice to the project. Instead, the source can be easily corrected using {{Own based}}. I do not see why you add {{Datasource missing}} if you know that the data comes from Schwartzberg, Joseph E. (1978). "Currency of Selected Languages and Scripts". A Historical Atlas of South Asia. University of Chicago Press. p. 102. ISBN 978-0195068696. Thus it is not an original research.
- Finally, as you see, in that case basically all you did is wrong and against the collaborative spirit of Wikimedia! Try to help other users that are not as aware of guidelines as you instead of trying to destroy their work. Of course, when the other user acts in good faith. --Ruthven (msg) 10:43, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Ruthven, thanks for getting back to me:
- Regarding File:Idioma kannada.png: I don't know what the source is. The English Wikipedia says it's Schwartzberg but I have no way to verify as the two areas do not exactly match (maybe on purpose to avoid copyvio?). Maps created by this user never mention their sources. Since 2012... When people ask them to add sources, they don't answer (e.g., User_talk:Fobos92#Map_Data_Sources, User_talk:Fobos92#Credits_needed_for_File:Lenguas_altaicas_v_2_(2017).png_and_File:Lenguas_altaicas.png, and User_talk:Fobos92/Archive/2012#File:Idioma_polaco.PNG). I've just started a discussion on File_talk:Idioma_kannada.png#Sources_for_this_map and you're right that I should have done that earlier. I hope the author will answer.
- Regarding File:BMAC.png: you didn't answer, is it incorrect to add {{Datasource missing}} to such a map?
- Cheers, A455bcd9 (talk) 11:25, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- If you have fun in adding {{Datasource missing}} to all the old maps, who am I to judge you?
- But such actions done systematically need comunity consensus. So it's ok to do that on a file you're about to use because you're writing an article with it. However, if you do that on all the files you encounter, like an human bot, and without double checking the data, it might be problem. Ruthven (msg) 13:30, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Haha thanks @Ruthven.
- Of course I double-check the data before adding {{Datasource missing}}.
- Now that I have a better understanding of {{No source since}} I'm reverting my edits where I wrongly added it, sorry again. A455bcd9 (talk) 13:34, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Ruthven, the remaining maps where I kept {{No source since}} are:
- File:Idioma kannada.png (for the reasons mentioned above)
- File:Dialetti italici 400aC.jpg
- File:IwiMap.png
- File:Karte Sprachen Graubünden.png (self references itself as the source)
- I hope these ones are correctly tagged. If not, please let me know and I'll remove them. A455bcd9 (talk) 14:13, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Actually I removed these ones as well after careful consideration and feedback from Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Threshold_of_originality_for_linguistic_maps. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions @Ruthven. A455bcd9 (talk) 18:46, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Well, for old files (< 2006-7) there was no VRTS available, so it might also be that the copyright holders uploaded the files in good faith, and there was no way to verify the identity of the uploader. The only file that looks suspicious to me is File:Karte Sprachen Graubünden.png, but, again, it's difficult to verify, and eventually the map is very simple (thus below ToO). Which template?
You keep reverting my edits claiming that I broke a template. Care to elaborate? M.Bitton (talk) 14:10, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- It's just that you added one more "}}" in the "source" field so then the rest of the template is broken after that and is displayed incorrectly as code on the page. A455bcd9 (talk) 14:12, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Couldn't you just remove the brackets instead of reverting? M.Bitton (talk) 14:13, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't revert your edits: I removed the brackets and moved the text to the "Description" part because it's in English and not multilingual and it's not the source. A455bcd9 (talk) 14:14, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- That's a revert. As for the source and the bothersome map, I think I have a good idea of what to do as soon as I have some free time. M.Bitton (talk) 14:16, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think it's a revert: all the information you added is still in the infobox. Amazing if you have a way to solve this problem! A455bcd9 (talk) 14:22, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- I noticed that you're making another claim (the map in the source is different). If that's the case (I'll await your confirmation), a map based on the source will be uploaded. M.Bitton (talk) 14:24, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- I only said this for File:Arabic Dialects mk.svg where the borders are different (check the Iraqi/Saudi border). File:Arabic Dialects.svg seems to have the exact same border as Schmitt's map (but different colors for some dialects => it's fine). A455bcd9 (talk) 14:26, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- The French-language map is also quite different. A455bcd9 (talk) 14:28, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- By the way @M.Bitton: how do you plan to solve the issue of en:Nubi language that is spoken in Uganda and Kenya but shown in Egypt and Sudan on this map?
- I initially defended this map (and I'm the one who found the backwards copy and then Buidhe added the information to Commons) but the issue with Nubi is unfortunately too big... A455bcd9 (talk) 14:49, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

December 2022
Can you please refrain from trying to impose your edits on a map that I uploaded? M.Bitton (talk) 13:43, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @M.Bitton, I don't understand, it's Commons, anyone can modify the description, what's the issue with adding a French translation? A455bcd9 (talk) 14:14, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Not when the uploader objects to the change (unless you think that they are incapable of describing their own work). You didn't just add a French translation (what you also did is stuck what you were trying to add in a French template ({{fr|{{based}}). The bigger issue is that you keep ignoring the wish of the uploader and wikilawyering at the expense of what the project is meant for. M.Bitton (talk) 14:30, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Yes @M.Bitton, it starts with {{fr| because it is a French translation. Currently the source field is displayed like this on my end in a mix of French (my display language in my Commons preferences) and English (your text): "Travail personnel based on data from IUCN Red List of Threatened Species". So I added a French translation. Can you please tell me what the issue is? A455bcd9 (talk) 14:34, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- I told you what the big issue is. If you're still not happy with the explanation, you're more than welcome to take it to the admin board. M.Bitton (talk) 14:36, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @M.Bitton: isn't there a better way to solve this and add multilingual translations than taking it to the admin board? A455bcd9 (talk) 14:56, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- I don't object to the multilingual translations, so long as they are proper ones (exact translations and not some editor's pov). M.Bitton (talk) 15:06, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- @M.Bitton: OK. And how was this "some editor's pov"? A455bcd9 (talk) 15:12, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- Come to think of it, there is another way to stop this waste of energy: uploading the maps to en.wp and preventing their transfer to Commons. Problem solved. M.Bitton (talk) 15:14, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not sure to understand but if you think it solves the problem: all good! A455bcd9 (talk) 15:46, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi. Please update the map with data for December or November 2022. Or please explain how you update this map so that I can update it myself. Rtfroot (talk) 13:46, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Rtfroot: the code is here. Feel free to update it. A455bcd9 (talk) 13:49, 1 January 2023 (UTC)
- I tried to update the map using your code, the map was generated but in different colors. What could be the problem?
- Generated map in wrong colors here Rtfroot (talk) 23:52, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- I also had to edit the code to make it run without errors.
- I added worldmap_chart = pygal.maps.world.World()
- Instead of worldmap_chart = pygal.maps.World() Rtfroot (talk) 23:59, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Rtfroot: did you use this script?
- If there are errors, can you please do a pull request?
- Regarding the map, I'm not sure but I think I didn't like the map so I generated the value with the script and then manually edited a blank SVG map. Anyway what I did to update the SVG file was just to compare the values of the most recent month to the ones of the SVG file ("Compare 2 months" in the Jupyter Notebook) and then I update the SVG file accordingly... A455bcd9 (talk) 18:36, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, I ran your script.
- Ok, then I'll do as you did, generate the data and create the file manually ("Compare 2 months"). Where can I get a blank world map? Rtfroot (talk) 18:45, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Rtfroot. Actually the map was from Sept 2022. I checked ("Compare 2 months") the Dec 2022 values: they're identical, except for Georgia (en->ka) and Uzbekistan (ru->uz). So I downloaded the SVG map, opened it with Inkscape and edited these two countries' colors manually. A455bcd9 (talk) 19:47, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- Oh thanks for the update. Now I understand how to do it. Rtfroot (talk) 19:52, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- Arzimaydi! A455bcd9 (talk) 20:17, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- @A455bcd9: Can you explain me what colors does the file use, as well the method? I also tried to update the file for November in December 31, experimenting with grayfying Uzbekistan at first, but to no avail. The shade of grey was slightly different and a few shades of turquoise remained. NikosLikomitros (talk) 23:38, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
- Also, I would like to learn how the comparations (for example, March 2021 and 2022) are done. I study the statistics every day and I'm very familiar with the trends, but I would like to learn how. NikosLikomitros (talk) 23:40, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @NikosLikomitros @Rtfroot, I added a section "How to update" below the information box here: File:Most_popular_edition_of_Wikipedia_by_country.svg. Is it clear enough? Feel free to edit it and improve it. A455bcd9 (talk) 10:07, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

New version
I have uploaded a new version now Occitan dialects legend-en. In your file I added this in |other versions and I also added a category. If you don't want this just edit it, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 11:55, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks @Goran tek-en! I've just added it to Occitan language, but could you please update the colors in the legend? Best, A455bcd9 (talk) 12:05, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- I guess I you mean on the wp article, I did but please check.
- When closing the editing part there was this message with script warnings. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 12:24, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks @Goran tek-en. (I fixed the errors as well) A455bcd9 (talk) 13:04, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
I wonder if some note could be added about which language edition is most read for each of the grey countries. I would guess that in most cases it's the national language edition that is the most popular, but it'd be good to know for sure. Double sharp (talk) 00:16, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- Yes @Double sharp: Italian in Italy, Dutch in the Netherlands, Turkish in Turkey, Persian in Iran, etc. But there are a few exceptions, as far as I remember: Iranian Persian in Afghanistan (there's no Dari Wikipedia, while there is a Tajik one) and in Laos the Thai Wikipedia is more popular than the Lao Wikipedia. In the Balkans, the various varieties compete as well (Bosnian wiki, Serbian wiki, Serbo-Croatian wiki and Croatian wiki). Feel free to add this information in the file description. A455bcd9 (talk) 09:03, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
- Interesting, thanks for the clarification. I've added a note about Farsi in Afghanistan. I didn't add it about Laos and the Balkans, because they're already listed as having English as the most popular WP (in the latter case, probably because of competition between the varieties, I'd guess). Outdated status
You have made some edits reverting the geopolitical status of some territories to an outdated status dating back to 2021 - thats a 2 year outdated status. This is misleading considering the controlled status of Sool / Cayn was changed in 2022, and officially proclaimed changed this year 2023 in the summer. The president of the new entity called Khatumo, president Firdhiye, is in talks to discuss the Khatumo state which is still in a transitionary and provisional status and we may get clarification of its status in late 2024, whether as a municipality, a regional state or an independent state. Until a conclusion has been reached for these talks, projected for late 2024, I myself pledge to refrain from making further uploads on its status and I expect you to do the same. Several people are complaining about your edits and as noted by one user, your argument is "extremely flawed". Revert your edits. A455bcd9 (talk) 13:17, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
- If Khatumo border changes should be reverted, then by your logic Artsakh border changes should be reverted as well. Caawiyahaderon (talk) 13:54, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
