Jacques Chereau

I saw you have made some very nice contributions to the article on Jacques Chereau on the Wikipedia. Thank you. I also noticed that the article mentions his son Jacques-Simon Chereau (1732–?), his older brother François Chereau dit le vieux (1680–1729), François Chereau le jeune (1717–1755, son of François le vieux), or Jacques-François Chereau (1742–1794, son of François le jeune). I seem to remember reading somewhere that the members of this family all worked together in the atelier Jacques Chereau, and that Jacques-François joined the atelier while his grand-uncle was still living, and continued to create engravings after the older man's death, often using just the name Jacques Chereau in the signature. (Sorry, I have not yet located where I saw this information. But I see you mention it.) In any case, the exact authorship of the image at File:L'incendie de la Foire Saint-Germain en 1762 - Gallica.jpg may not be entirely clear. The fire at the Foire Saint-Germain occurred when Jacques Chereau was 73 years old. The engraving was presumably produced sometime after this date. It is not dated on the Gallica website. Also the authorship field is not present. The publisher field has the following information: "A Paris chez Jacques Chereau rue S.t Jacques au dessus de la Fontaine S.t Severin aux 2 Colonnes". Gallica may have deliberately not assigned authorship because of these uncertainties. Since it is possible that authorship cannot be firmly established by the signature alone, if we are going to try to assign authorship for that image, I was thinking it might be more accurate to say "Chez Jacques Chereau" or something to that effect. [Update: I got my info on the family members from Bénézit's Dictionnaire (1976). It seems there may be some differences from the other sources. Sounds like a great idea to put "Chez Jacques Chereau, " so I did it. Also, it looks like the ladies in the family engraved also. I found several of their names on a list of French women engravers. You may find this image of interest, as it shows that Chez Chereau survived at least the early days of the French Revolution and were still located at their old location on rue Jacques near the double columns, which is now near the Sorbonne. The image just popped out at me from the Wiki page. The Chereau style is quite unmistakable. I also found some images of early ballooning at National Air & Space Museum to add to the Chez Chereau collection. Do you think we should put any of this discussion on the actual Jacques Chereau page?Ellin Beltz (talk) 07:38, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Gallica seems to have a different print of the same engraving here. I found a lot of material at Gallica when I searched "chez chereau". Attributions included "chez Chereau rue des Mathurins", "chez François Chereau", "Chez la V.ve Chéreau M.de d'Estampes, Rue Saint Jacques N° 10. aux deux Colonnes, près la fontaine Saint Severin", etc, besides the "chez Jacques Chereau, rue St. Jacques". Some of the ones labelled "Vve [Widow] Chéreau" are early 19th century, e.g here. --Robert.Allen (talk) 10:33, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

I found a biography of Jacques-François Chéreau at the British Museum [1] which reads: "Printseller and publisher, the major dealer in Paris after Basan in his time. Son of François II and Geneviève Marguerite Chéreau, and reunited the stock of the two branches of the Chéreau family. Sold out to Joubert in 1786; committed suicide in 1794 after his son-in-law was guillotined." The Veuve (widow) Chereau seems to have met a bitter end. I have found a journal with headline "CONDAMNATION A MORT DU NOMME BELOT POUR LE MEURTRE DE MME VEUVE CHEREAU," (Condemnation to death of named Belot for the Murder of the Madame Widow Chereau) L'Action Française No: 98 08/04/1909 [2] Ellin Beltz (talk) 15:51, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

I tried the British Museum link, but it appears to rely on cookies from a previous search, since all I got was a blank page, but I was able to find it with a search. Very interesting. I wonder when they moved the merged business to the rue Mathurins. It was probably after the print "LIncendie de la Foire Saint-Germain" was produced, since that still gives the old address. And also probably well after Jacques Chereau had died in 1776. (That website also seems to have a lot of prints.) Regarding the murder: did this report appear in 1909? Maybe it is a different Widow Chereau? Also, I'm thinking we might want to consider either renaming the Jacques Chéreau page or creating a separate one about the atelier. I ran into a similar situation with the atelier Jollain and decided to create a page called Jollain (engravers). BTW, we should probably use the acute accent on the first "e" in the article name. As an aside, Saur's The Artists of the World: Bio-bibliographical Index lists many of the members of this family, and also cites Allgemeines Kunstler Lexikon vol. XVIII (Leipzig, 1998) as the source of the information. I doubt that is in a library near me, but I'll try to look around. --Robert.Allen (talk) 19:34, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Would you be so kind as to rename the Jacques Chéreau to include the acute accent on the first "e"? I don't know how to rename articles yet. If you would like to make the collective page for the family, I'd be happy to fill in more information I have. I was also going to put links to the images I found in places like the British Museum which have rules about how to use their images. I don't want to get in trouble for using images improperly! Later I will go looking for Saur's online perhaps I will get lucky, otherwise I am sure our librarian can round one up sooner or later. I caught another dozen references to the family by using Google timeline earlier today. I have a long list of names and dates from the Municipal Records of Paris to translate from French later. Perhaps some of the details will be forthcoming. And I don't know if the Widow mentioned in 1909 is the same one, I only found the newspaper article in that one photographic source. I have not found it in any readable format yet. How did you become interested in old prints? I suspect you know a lot more about it than I do. Today I put language on the Wikicommons Jacques Chéreau page to include the chez Chéreau prints I keep finding in wiki. Again, perhaps we break it out later when there is more material. I have Bénézit's Dictionnaire and Saur's bio-bibliographical index, so I can add the info from them, but have not seen the Allgemeines Kunstler Lexikon (AKL). If you read German and have a good library nearby with the AKL, you might be able to consult that one. Here is the WordCat OCLC 29476005. Welcome back

I'm glad to see you back on Commons after our encounter last spring. Again, I am sorry that caused such offense -- I wish it were otherwise.

I see that you are doing a variety of Category work, something that is always much needed, thank you.

You might want to take a look at both HotCat and Cat-a-lot, which, in different ways, save a lot of time changing categories. They are both available to you at My preferences > Gadgets > Tools for categories.

In doing long series of similar edits -- such as "removed from "People by Name" Category because that is only to contain pages of people by name, not individual photos" -- you might find AWB useful. It takes a little practice, but dramatically speeds making identical changes to a long list of files. See Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser for information. AWB requires permission, which I would be happy to give you if you'd like to try it. (I should note that Cat-a-lot will also remove or change a category for selected files in a category - I just removed 200 images from Category:People by name with five clicks).

Thanks for the offer of help with categories, I'm not sure I understand the links well enough to ask for permission to use the system; I'm mostly just poking around fixing things that seem obvious. Last spring part of the reason I went on hiatus with Wiki was a death threat I received by someone blanking my home page to leave the threat. They were not banned from wiki for that action at that time but rather for the addition of two words to "Barney the Purple Dinosaur" page on April 1. That and the Paysonville Plaque were the straws that overloaded my camel. I don't know if doing wikistuff has ever gotten you both a death threat and an admin mad at you in about 3 or 4 weeks for doing nothing really wrong, but if it ever happens and you want a vacation, I will most certainly understand. Again, thanks for the offer of help, I am still trying to understand categories well enough to be sure I don't make any really egregious errors, and automation looks like a great way for my personal "bad-luck cloud" to wreak havoc. No, the worst real life thing that ever happened to me was a blog who connected me with real life identity and made a bunch of nasty, out of context, accusations based on a valid file keep I had made. While I like the transparency of using my real name, it does make me nervous from time to time -- perhaps we both made bad choices in that.

I sympathize with your concern that the tools might aid havoc rather than helping. That's most possible with AWB, and, to a very much lesser extent, with Cat-a-Lot.

You really should look at HotCat, though. Without it, to change a cat on a file, you have to click on Edit, wait for the page to reload, and scroll down to the bottom of the edit box and delete or add the cats as needed. Then click on Save and wait for the page to reload again.

HotCat adds plus and minus signs to the categories as you look at a file. To remove a cat, you click on its minus sign. Whoosh, it's gone. To add one, you click on a plus sign at the end of the list, an edit box appears and you type in the new cat name (without the Category: prefix). It suggests categories as you type, so you type much less. Click on save, and the new cat appears, without a page reload. To change a category -- that is, remove one and add a similar one -- you click on the cat's +/- symbol and the edit box appears as with an addition.

It's entirely manual, and works one file and one category at a time, so you see its result after each action. Not much room for havoc to be wrought and it saves a lot of time. .     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 21:19, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello again!! I actually got Cat-a-Lot working after spending a week or so on Maps of ___ County, California, etc. by hand I finally got brave and made some automated changes. The hardest thing for me is selecting the images. It took about 10 minutes to get it the first time and will still take some practice to get it easy. How strange

Hi Ellin Beltz, nice to meet you.

Many people have accused me that my comments are repetitive like spam. I wish I could have a better wording. I opted for short titles but well done because my English is not very good, but that's no excuse. I appreciate your comments on my nominations. Some users seem to be rigid with the rules, they sabotage nominations applying the rules too much. I appreciate all the help, suggestions or comments that you can give me to improve my comments on the nominations, I've been trying to do this in my last nominations. Hi The Photographer, also very nice to meet you! But under such silly circumstances. It looks to me like Mercurywoodrose went through and checked all your nominations. They only disagreed with one or two. I get the funny feeling that a couple of other editors are working together on some of these really strange images, but I can't imagine why they'd get so passionate about stickers in the gutter, photoshopped blue dresses and other images. I have just gotten active again in deletions and after being accused of being "too short" in my replies, I made a pile of "canned" replies, some of which I keep here on my user page, others in a file on my desktop and I rotate through them. Some days I use a lot of COM:SCOPE tags, and others I don't. Apparently I made huge mistake yesterday by accident replying on Deletion Request when I had not yet logged in. The system recorded my IP, I logged in right after and said "that comment is mine," but I have already a warning received from an admin and I have promised to be much more careful about logging in first from now on. I don't understand the accusations and emotionalism being aimed at just ordinary editors trying to dig out from a huge backlog of images for deletion. I suspect only from how and what they are doing that perhaps they are angry at the admins and trying to waste time for everyone concerned. Otherwise these very defensive/offensive arguments don't seem to make much sense. As for me, I will keep swapping up what I say in the deletion requests. For you, because you do nominations, I would strongly recommend collecting all the necessary tags, e.g. COM:SCOPE, COM:PRP and so on and use them liberally in your deletion nomination. Then you only need to say "Fails COM:SCOPE: blurry, personal image, not in use, poor metadata..." whatever applies. If you make these notes up in advance you can spend a lot of time on each one, and then cut and paste the right one into the nomination. Voila!! You become long-winded and very specific and it's really no harder than just using one phrase. And I also suggest avoid use of word "facebook" those who use it are fanatics and those who won't use it are fanatics, either way it's just one of those flash-point words that is just easier to not say! People who want to make this project a place of support and not a place of infinite philosophical dispute or trolling without any sense (blue dress, for example).
