Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:43, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Copyright status: File:Wu (Chinese characters).svg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Wu (Chinese characters).svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 18:00, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
Guizhou (Chinese characters)
[edit]Hi. You just uploaded a new version of File:Guizhou (Chinese characters).svg. Please check the usage of the file before reuploading a new one with new content. Unfortunately our navigation bar looks bad now because it's too big and contains two rows. It would have been better to upload it under a new name (and rename the old one in advance, if necessary). Please can you provide the old one as well? So our navigation bar in the province articles look like before. -- DerFussi 07:10, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- @DerFussi: the original one needs to be made a separate and distinct file. I have created a large number (over 100) of these SVG files with the naming convention "NAME (Chinese characters).svg" that are used across the English Wikipedia. In all of these files, if there are differences between the Simplified and Traditional forms, both versions are produced. Your Guizhou file does not do this – it only gives the Simplified form of guì (贵 or 貴). Your file needs to be re-uploaded with a name like "Guizhou (Simplified Chinese characters).svg", because it interferes with the established practice. I will do this myself. I have never seen my files being used on the other smaller Wikipedias, and you should have been aware of the established practice to avoid this conflict. White whirlwind (talk) 14:45, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- You may find the file at File:Guizhou (Simplified Chinese characters).svg — Preceding unsigned comment added by White whirlwind (talk • contribs) 14:51, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I use some of such files for the German Wikivoyage and Guizhou was missing (not only Wikipedia uses these files). So I created it by myself (If I remember right, I created even some more). You can see on the file's site at the bottom where its used. It would be nice just to inform the wiki or the uploader about your changes on a file, if the changes are so big, so the users can react, reupload it or change the file name in the wiki, but please do not do it without any notice. There is no rule about established practices (and many other user would not know about it), and if there is, you can suggest an existing file to be renamed to harmonize file names to a set of file. Thenaks for the reupload of the old file. I will fix our navigation bar. -- DerFussi 17:08, 13 August 2018 (UTC)
File:Dragon Boat Festival (Chinese characters).svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Changing a few scale vector graphics
[edit]@White whirlwind: Hello from Wikipedia. I have noticed your hard work on creating scale vector graphics for Chinese characters and you have done a great part in contributing to the China section of the encyclopedia. I am asking if you can modify some of the Chinese character scale vector graphics about Guangzhou and Sanya, two cities located in the People's Republic of China.
Since these are about PRC-related articles, the simplified Chinese characters should be on top of the traditional Chinese characters. I hope that you will spare some of your time to modify them, as for me, I do not have to skill to modify them, as shown by the numerous modifications and reversions I did in "SY name.svg". - 祝好,Josephua (聊天) 19:47, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Josephua: See File:Guangzhou (Chinese characters).svg and File:Sanya (Chinese characters).svg. White whirlwind (talk) 23:10, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- @White whirlwind: Can you also fix Dandong, which is a city in the PRC that borders North Korea? Here is the image:
- Thanks. - 祝好,Josephua (聊天) 02:49, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
File:Lhasa (Chinese and Tibetan).svg requires updating
[edit]Hi White whirlwind,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Lhasa (Chinese and Tibetan).svg is out of date. Tibetan is the native language of Lhasa. Chinese characters are not the native language or script of Lhasa. The signs of Lhasa put Tibetan above Chinese characters- for instance [1]. Could you update it? Thanks again. Geographyinitiative (talk) 19:35, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- No. First, that image does not support your point. The Chinese script in it is far larger and more prominent than the Tibetan despite their vertical arrangements. Second, these discussions inevitably devolve into geopolitical arguments that I intend to steer well clear of. White whirlwind (talk) 19:40, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
