| About Hana Suzuki : Hana Mitsui is a Tokyo based textile designer and the founder of Hana Material Design Laboratory Inc. With a background in both traditional Japanese weaving techniques and contemporary textile innovation, she brings a unique cross-cultural perspective to her work. Mitsui studied textile design at Tama Art University in Tokyo and earned her Master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London. After gaining experience at international fashion houses and design studios, she established her own studio to explore material research, fabric design, and collaborative projects with various industries. Her practice is centered on developing textiles that connect cultural heritage with modern living through thoughtful design, workshops, and educational outreach. For me, design and art are acts of weaving “materials” and “time.” In textile creation, we build structure by interlacing the smallest unit—thread—but within that structure, I believe it’s possible to embed culture, memory, and even the atmosphere of a place. My practice involves reexamining traditional techniques and materials that have been passed down through generations, and exploring how they can be translated into contemporary life. I see design as a means of problem-solving and art as a way of raising questions. The boundary between the two is fluid, and I’m drawn to the expressions that emerge in that in-between space—a kind of quiet margin. Through my work, I hope to gently touch people’s memories and senses, offering moments of quiet discovery within everyday life. ORGANIZATION: Hana Material Design Laboratory inc.
