about

Continuous Tone is pleased to announce the release of ‘Fragments of Naderi’ by Mariam Morshed. This two-track EP is a sound collage dedicated to 50 years of Persian traditional music taken from the archives of Radio Iran. Considered to be counter-revolutionary, these pieces were removed from official annals during the initial years of the Iranian Revolution in 1979, yet could still be found as cassette bootlegs on Naderi Street in Tehran throughout the early 1990’s.

‘Excerpt 51’ and ‘Excerpt 52’ utilise milliseconds of sound harvested from these recordings, looped alongside a combination of synthesiser and field recordings to form an accumulative and deteriorated recollection of a once-was westward leaning Islamic culture. Waves of truncated melodies wash upon the shore of perception like a dream, or maybe as a genome mapping experiment that has been designed to rediscover the locus of what it means to be Iranian. With the on-going political unrest, these lost sounds from all-but-forgotten society resonate as a collective mourning for those who have fought and continue to fight to reclaim their human rights, heritage, and culture.
