Stapelia is a genus of low-growing, spineless, stem succulent plants, predominantly from South Africa with a few from other parts of Africa. Several Asian and Latin American species were formerly included but they have all now been transferred to other genera. The flowers of certain species, most notably Stapelia gigantea, can reach 41 cm (16 inches) in diameter when fully open. Most Stapelia flowers are visibly hairy and generate the odour of rotten flesh when they bloom.

second, brighter shot of Huernia zebrina. For those interested in plants: This is a stapeliad or carrion flower. Interestingly, though other members of the group eg: Stapelia or Piaranthus smell like rotten meat or fish, this plant (and all other Huernia spp.) dont seem to smell much at all. The flies still seem interested so perhaps it's something beyond our olfactory skills. It's not carnivorous - the flies are simply pollinators. It's easy to grow in well drained potting mixes with 5-6…

This is a starfish flower cactus or Stapelia grandiflora also known as a carrion flower. The smell of these flowers is like dead flesh. The attract flies for pollination. Despite its common name, this is not a cactus but it is a succulent. These plants are native to South Africa. Yes, they really do have a rather unpleasant smell, however, since I have almost no sense of smell at all, I am not the source for the editorializing about the smell.
