The Closet Historian: 5 Essentials for a Vintage Inspired Wardrobe Vintage Capsule Wardrobe, Call The Midwife, Agent Carter, Silly Things, Mid Century Vintage, Downton Abbey, Emphasis, The Closet, Capsule Wardrobe

Maybe you are have just started to become interested in vintage fashion, or perhaps you only want to add a hint of vintage flair into your regular look, in any case only a few essentials are needed to begin curating a vintage inspired look. I have always adored vintage styles, but my own vintage wardrobe adventures began in high school with a few 1950's inspired sundresses and a devotion to red lipstick. Throughout college I was to be found in a uniform of dark jeans, tall black boots, a…

Look carefully, can you see the flaws in the fit? You don't really have to look that carefully actually. The darts aren't pointing to the true apex, they are too long/tall and actually come up to/over the apex. The whole front seems to be riding up in general, a forward shoulder issue perhaps? There is a ton of excess fabric at the front armhole, you could pinch a whole 'nother dart there above the bust at the armscye. As a result this dress is one of my least favorite, which is a shame…

I always put off working with rayon challis, but it's not that slippy, I don't know why I am so hesitant! This tropical print rayon was one of the challis languishing in my stash. I was originally so exited to use it when I first bought some (at Joanns! They still have it) and then put off turning into a dress for ages. But boy am I glad to have this 1940's inspired dress out of this lovely print now! So lightweight and perfect for summer, someone take me on a vacation! This dress was part…

The Closet Historian: Classic Black With Pearls Dark Green Accessories, Historian Outfit, Closet Historian, Space Watch, American Duchess, Black Silk Scarf, Soft Green Color, Footwear Heels, Green Pumps

I feel like an all black ensemble paired with pearls is about as classic as a look can get, but for some reason I never seem to reach for pearls. I've had this 3 strand faux pearl necklace for a while now, but I'm always afraid pearls might be a bit too firmly associated with the "50's housewife" look. It would perhaps be better to consider that stereotype as a creative challenge. How to make pearls less prim? By contrast, wearing all black is much more comfortable for me! I used to wear the…

The Closet Historian: Pattern Drafting: Fitting Your New Bodice Sloper Bodice Sloper, Closet Historian, Sloper Pattern, Sewing Activities, Basic Bodice, Pattern Drafting, Sewing Basics, The Closet, Chef's Jackets

So after last week's incredibly fun foray into math...because, sure, math is fun, now we must focus on making the new sloper pattern we have drafted fit properly. It is very doubtful your new sloper will fit perfectly right after you plot it out, or if like me you resorted the the standardized measurement chart it is almost certain that the resulting pattern won't fit you perfectly! Never fear, we aren't looking for perfect, at least not yet! Time to start fixing and fitting! So you have…

Some may categorise the 'sexy librarian' with 'geek chic'. They're basically the same, right? Well, not quite. The two styles may have some unequivocal similarities but the foundation of these trends are somewhat contrasting. Some of the style rules are the same but the origins differ greatly. Geek chic only emerged properly in the late 90s

The Closet Historian: outfit The Closet Historian, Historian Outfit, Closet Historian, American Duchess, Black Silk Scarf, Halloween Ball, Green Pumps, Cat Eyeliner, Brown Accessories

Just a few snaps of an outfit I wore back in October to visit the Denver Botanical Gardens with my parents. This dress is a favorite and must get worn at least once every autumn, becuase this print is the beeeeest ever. I paired it with a striped plasticflex handbag, green pumps from American Duchess, and some antique brass lantern charm earrings. Wishing everyone a happy December! I'm busy as ever and moving slower than usual too, as my mind seems to want to shut off and hibernate until the…
