DJ Does Pottery on Instagram: "Making a chip bowl 🥔

What is grog?! Grog is a combination of alumina, silica, and other minerals or can even be finely ground specks of previously fired clay that has been crushed. Grog is used to strengthen clay since the particles allow for structural reinforcement. This means that the clay is stable and less likely to crack in the drying process—and makes for great hand-building (especially for bigger pieces like this one)!

Pinched Pottery on Instagram: "4oz pinched cups in espresso. I named this clay “espresso”, it’s actually a mix of 3 different brown clays that I loved but unfortunately discontinued. I also added in coarse grog as well. Started with a ball of clay about 220-230g and as always, rough shaped them first then let them dry until they are firm enough to be handled without losing their shape to do the final shaping/pinching. I didn’t need any tools for these. Raw inside and out - fired twice, bisque fired at cone 04 then glazed fired at cone 6 without any glazes on. Sealed with @liquid_quartz_sealer. Full making videos are saved on story highlights. . . . . . #stoneware #darkclay #pinchpot #handbuiltpottery #handmademug #handbuilding #ceramiclove #rustic #ceramics #tableware #ceramiccup #pinc Hand Pinched Pottery, Handbuilding Pottery Ideas Pinch Pots, Ceramic Pinch Pots Ideas, Hand Built Cups, Pinch Mug Pottery, Pinch Cups Ceramics, Ceramic Hand Built Mugs, Pinch Pot Mug, Pinch Mug

Orangestone with grog - made by Highwater clay. Works best with some grog added (I’m using the term “grog” loosely here as a “catch-all” term for any sort of gritty addition to your clay, kyanite, quartz, and mullite as alternative examples)

Helios porcelain - from Highwater clays. You can see with this one the natural character of the clay (dried slightly), it tends to not tear easily and sticks to itself even when partially dried.

Helios with grog - grog helps clay tear apart more easily, this gives a sharper line to the cut and is easier to control. This unsung hero of the pottery world is made from pre-fired clay, which, when ground into fine particles, can be re-integrated into fresh clay. This magical blend not only imparts robustness but also significantly reduces shrinkage during the firing process, making your pottery pieces durable and crack-resistant. 🏺✨ But how do you make grog yourself? It's a journey of transformation! Start by collecting your broken bisqueware or discarded fired pieces.
