Leaf litter

That leaf litter in your yard is more valuable than you may realize. Whatever you call it, don’t rake, blow, or bag it! Those leaves provide excellent protection for slugs, snails, worms, centipedes and millipedes, spiders, beetles, and even bats and small mammals.

Leaf litter is the perfect snuggly home for a hibernating hedgehog.

One of the things I love about walking in the forest is kicking my way through the leaf litter, this colourful pile was below a large beech tree. I love the rich, warm colours glistening from the recent rain. I spotted the lichen not far away, this plant has always fascinated me with its incredible structure. I like all manner of fungi. They make excellent subjects but they do require the photographer to crawl around leaf litter, usually on a wet day. I did not mind my crawl today because I was in persuit of an unusuall subject, the red cage fungus which I have never seen growing before. This specimen was in a council garden bed near the river walk in Bulimba. There is another red cage in the foreground but it did not open.
