One of the things I love about walking in the forest is kicking my way through the leaf litter, this colourful pile was below a large beech tree. I love the rich, warm colours glistening from the recent rain. I spotted the lichen not far away, this plant has always fascinated me with its incredible structure. I like all manner of fungi. They make excellent subjects but they do require the photographer to crawl around leaf litter, usually on a wet day. I did not mind my crawl today because I was in persuit of an unusuall subject, the red cage fungus which I have never seen growing before. This specimen was in a council garden bed near the river walk in Bulimba. There is another red cage in the foreground but it did not open.
