Follow along as I sew an Early Victorian corded petticoat to wear for historical interpreting.
Remember this petticoat? I’ve posted it as inspiration for pretty much every HSF challenge it would qualify for: Under it All, White, Eastern Influence, Embellishment… Clearly I’m madly in love with it, and I’ve always wanted to recreate it, but the dream seemed impossible. I simply don’t have the time to do the amazing handiwork, and what were the chances of finding a similar fabric? And then this arrived at The Fabric Store (yes, that’s actually it’s name): Ah-maze-ing! Naturally, I had to…
In the 1840s and 1850s, dome-shaped or bell-shaped skirts were fashionable. The steel cage crinoline was not yet invented. So Victorian women used different types of petticoats to create the fashionable shape: like plain cotton petticoats, crisply starched petticoats, tucked petticoats, corded petticoats and quilted petticoats. One of the problems with my sewing is that I sew A LOT, and not all of it looks particularly interesting and dynamic unless I manage to do a whole photoshoot in it, in a picturesque locale (which, luckily, there are lots of in the Wellington region!). Thing is, photoshoots take a lot of time and planning, and a willing photographer (which, unluckily, Mr D is not often). So I do a bit of self-timed photos, and a lot of mannequin photos. Even with good images, some sewing isn’t that…
Mid 1890's petticoat made from Truly Victorian's #170 pattern.
Which bustle era you may ask? Well I think this rather simple petticoat could work for either the 1st (1869s-1876) or the 3rd (1883-1889) bustle periods, as I made it to wear over my Truly Victorian Imperial Tournure which is described as being good for either period as well. Though many petticoats (throughout history really) were made with linen, I used plain old bleached cotton muslin for mine. The nice thing about costuming in the 21st century is that you can choose how accurate you want…
As I discovered throughout my journey of making a 1860s outfit from scratch, the underpinnings take almost more time then the dress itself. After all there are may layers to consider and make and one of the essential ones is of course the petticoat! Thankfully Truly Victorian have a great Hoop Petticoat pattern that is absolutely FREE! Even better they promised that no hemming was required and which seamstress doesn't like that! Materials: 8m of fabric threat 2 buttons When my (male and non…

I always found Victorian tucked petticoats pretty, but I dreaded sewing all those tucks! 😉 But now I’ve finally sewn one. It’s inspired by antique Victorian tucked petticoats such as this mid-Victorian tucked petticoat at the MET museum, this late Victorian tucked petticoat and this shorter Victorian tucked petticoat. The join of the DIY scalloped broderie … Continue reading Victorian Tucked Petticoat →
