Defining Mental Illness - Introducing the DSM
This is a discussion activity that students can first work through either individually or in small groups. Students consider ten ficitional individuals who are described as having various unusual behaviors. After reading each description, they are then to decide if each person has a mental illness. This is a subjective activity, but for that reason, this can led to a discussion as to the criteria established by the DSM to classify behaviors as mental illnesses.
