Bringhurst talks about how designers may want to borrow asterisks from other typefaces to find an ideal match, but, at the end of the day, most type design is not going to require a large asterisk and at normal, legible type, the asterisk is going to be too small to discern more than the fact that there is a fuzzy form where the asterisk is supposed to be.
