Keep your knee slightly bent to reduce the tension in your sciatic nerve.

Hinge just at your hips until in a maximal stretch.

Contract your stretched out hamstring muscles by driving your heel downward.

Think about trying to actively bend your knee.

Once you hold this stretched out contraction, relax and then get deeper into the stretch.

Perform the stretched out contraction and hold. You are now performing an active hamstring stretch. 

You can vary the intensity that you contract your stretched out hamstring muscles while in the stretch.
