Editor's note: this is an archive image from 2003. A close up view of sodium chloride crystals in a water bubble within a 50-millimeter metal loop was photographed by an Expedition Six crewmember. The experiment took place in the Destiny laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). One of the rarest salts in the world, Persian Blue is harvested from a single banding running through the white base stock of an ancient salt lake in Iran. Through enormous tectonic pressures and plate movements, the salt crystals have taken on the colour of the mineral, sylvin. Thanks for viewing and happy macro Monday.

Once dry, every flake of salt is graded, sifted, and sorted. The fully formed pyramid-shaped crystals become our flake salt, while smaller flakes and coarser crystals become kosher salt. After sorting, the salt is sealed and sent to our Portland facility for packaging and distribution.

Table salt, sea salt, himalayan pink salt - So many options! Which do you use? We tend to like pink salt, because it contains over 84 minerals and other trace elements, including magnesium, potassium, calcium, copper, and iron! It comes from salt mines thousands of feet below the Himalayan mountains and is considered to be one of the most pure forms of salt available. 🏔️✨

Crystals can look quite magical when they appear from seemingly nowhere in a glass of water. In fact, they form from substances already dissolved in the water. Make your own salt crystal experiment, and learn how it works at the same time....
