The defining feature of a Second Empire style building is the Mansard roof, first used for an addition to the palace at the Louvre in Paris c. 1550.
This lovely house in Saline was built in 1873 in the Second Empire style. It is one of my favorite houses in the area where I live. The location is on the side street that is right behind the larger Davenport House. (This one was built by Davenport's son). The house is considered Italianate style and gingerbread though the roof is a low flaring mansard style with large brackets which make this a Second Empire.
