Lady Bate-Dudley circa 1787She was married to Gainsborough’s friend and champion, Henry Bate-Dudley. She’s shown here in a romantic woodland setting, leaning on a classical pedestal and an urn. Her pose is languid yet statuesque and the gesture of her left hand suggests a refined sensibility.

Described as 'a piece of fallen sky' the wonderful blue panniered gown worn by Gainsborough's -apparently dyspeptic- Mrs Andrews. The thick simplified folds in the skirt derive from Gainsborough's reliance on small dressed lay figures. c1781 | Portrait of Lady Rodney [née Anne Harley] by Thomas Gainsborough | The subject of this portrait is Anne Harley, daughter of a former lord mayor of London. In April 1781 she married the eldest son of the naval hero Lord Rodney. It has been suggested that the portrait was painted some months after the marriage, and that Anne's delicate gesture of lifting her train to her stomach signals pregnancy and deep contentment at approaching motherhood. | Philadelphia Museum of Art
