Can’t say exactly, but I was using this approach when I was doing children’s picture books, more than 20 years ago. So it’s been a while!  If this is new to you, this is an Imprimatura-Bistre - the “first layer” of paint that I believe is critical if you want luminosity in your paintings… and this is the way I start all my daytime landscape paintings.   For the Imprimatura, I’m using Transparent Earth Red and Van Dyke Brown oil paint thinned with odorless mineral spirits. For the Bistre, I’ve rubbed out highlights with a simple paper towel.
