about

Stefan Christensen’s first release of exclusively jouhikko based music. Christensen began playing jouhikko in the summer of 2023, inspired to play the traditional Finnish folk instrument as a way of getting in touch with his own Finnish heritage. His playing, still very much in its infancy, is deeply influenced by the playing of Pekko Käppi and Strybjörn Bergelt. This collection of six tracks, though very different from his previous work, is connected to it by its sparse nature and somber tone. Christensen’s voice is much more prominently featured than in previous work, with lyrical content drawn from both a deep sense of grief and sorrow at the ongoing state of war, repression, genocide, and holocaust around the globe, as well as inspiration and hope from those who have resisted these forces both currently and historically. An ardent proponent of amateurism throughout his music career, this release is perhaps the greatest example of just that, as Christensen creates powerful sounds despite, or perhaps in spite of his still developing capabilities on a new and radically different instrument.
