SILVER: Of TREASURES and THIEVES by Stephan Franck is Coming!

If you missed out on the Silver Kickstarter, you’re in luck because a new edition is coming.  Silver: Of Treasures and Thieves (Silver Book #1) will be released on October 18, 2022.  Here’s the lowdown…

A rollicking vampire-filled graphic novel heist that will keep you guessing until the very end for fans of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Ocean’s Eleven from award-nominated animator and comic book creator Stephan Franck

There are only two kinds of objects in this world. The ones that shine and the ones that don’t.

Silver’s protagonist, James Finnigan, only concerns himself with objects from the first category. Those objects don’t hide in plain sight. They hide in dark places.

When Finnigan loses his grifter gang’s lifetime fortune in a heist gone wrong, he stumbles on a consolation prize in the crypt of the Harker Foundation—a notebook that tells of an ancient, immeasurable treasure, accompanied by a bar of pure silver to prove it. It’s a tall tale, but also Finnigan’s only lead. In an effort to make up for what he’s lost, he mounts the heist of the millennium in search of the Silver Dragon. Just one catch: The famed treasure is said to be hidden in a castle full of vampires.

Set in the noir-pulp era of the 1930s, award-nominated animator Stephan Franck’s Silver is a rip-roaring, genre-bending graphic novel that draws on the best of gothic horror and heist tropes to tell a story that is pure adventure. Silver offers the captivating dynamics of an ensemble cast of misfits, while inviting us to accept that Bram Stoker’s Dracula was a tale of fact, not fiction. The result is a smart, innovative story complete with world-class visuals and sharply drawn characters that’s equal parts action, humor, and heart.

If this sounds like a ride you’d like to take, Silver: Of Treasures and Thieves pre-orders are here!

Stephan Franck’s PALOMINO: A Neo Noir Graphic Novel

Stephan Franck is back with a new Kickstarter called PALOMINO.  Franc describes it as a Neo Noir Graphic Novel Set In LA’s Country Music Clubs.

The year is 1981. The American Century is running on fumes, but the end isn’t anywhere in sight.

At the center of PALOMINO is a unique father-daughter relationship. Eddie Lang’s an ex-cop turned working musician with big dreams, but dreams don’t pay the rent. So Eddie reluctantly works as a private investigator to provide for his teenage daughter, Lisette.

Eddie and Lisette share an unbreakable bond and a dry sense of humor. But they’re stuck.

They’re haunted by a terrible loss and an unsolved crime that looms large over their lives. They’re running out of time to fix their family.

And just as things seem at a stalemate, a new murder case upends their lives.

If this sounds like something you’d like check out Stephen Franc’s Palomino Kickstarter.  I’m in.

How Do You Steal From Dracula? Stephan Franck Knows!

I’ve been singing the praises of Stephan Franck (writer & artist) since I discovered his Silver graphic novels which he describes as…

… an original universe built around Bram Stoker’s original Dracula, and it begins 40 years after the events of the novel, into the noir/pulp era of the 1930s. You meet James Finnigan, who is the most notorious conman/gentleman-thief of his day, as he teams up with Rosalynd “Sledge” Van Helsing (granddaughter of the original Van Helsing, and altogether the last of the Van Helsings), to steal a mystical treasure hidden in Dracula’s castle. Finn, of course, brings his known associates—a fun assortment of conmen and grifters of all kinds—as well as the kind of amoral attitude that puts him immediately at odds with Sledge. Lastly, the team enlists Tao Leu (or more accurately, he enlists himself), who is a 10-year-old boy with the gift of second sight and who might be the biggest scoundrel of them all.

As I posted here, Franck’s Kickstarter for Silver 3 is now live.  I’m on board.  If Silver sounds like your kind of fun, please consider joining.

As you can imagine, there’s been quite a bit of interest in Silver 3.  Davey Nieves of Comics Beat spoke with Franck about the ever-growing Silver universe… as does Derek Anderson at Daily Dead… and Stefan Blitz at Forces of Geek.

Stephen Franck, the creative genius behind Silver is back with Volume 3 and his Kickstarter for the project is live.  Franck is the writer and artist for Silver which can be summed up as…

…a high-concept, super fun genre-blender, featuring pulp-era conmen and a troubled female vampire-hunter as they try to steal a mystical treasure from a castle full of vampires — what could go wrong with that plan?!

Silver is great fun.  Franck is a talented writer/artist who has created a tale that meshes a horror story with a heist yarn pitting an unlikely team consisting of a rouge thief, his two partners, a con man, a old forger, a ten year old who can catch glimpses of the future and young woman who hunts vampires against Dracula and a castle full of the undead.

If you like what you see, you can jump on board with Franck’s Kickstarter for Silver Volume 3.  Volume 1 and 2 are also available through the Kickstarter, if needed.

Man, I can’t wait to get my mitts on Volume 3!

Wages of Fear aka Le salaire de la peur (2024)

Director: Julien Leclercq

Stars: Franck Gastambide, Alban Lenoir, Sofiane Zermani, Ana Girardot.

Tagline: None.

The Plot…

When a remote desert oil well catches fire, the only way to extinguish the blaze is to set off a small explosion that will put it out.  In less than 24 hours the oil well will explode.  If it blows the explosion will be gigantic and kill the local population.

A pair of brothers and a few other mercenaries are paid handsomely to drive two truckloads of highly explosive nitroglycerin to the site.  They’re sending two truckloads, because it is unlikely even one truck will make it.  With two there might be a chance.  Odds against making the journey safely include the speed needed to cover the distance, the rough terrain, bandits and more.

It’s a suicide mission to save a village.  Not all will survive.

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

Wages of Fear (2024) is a remake of 1953’s Le Salaire de la Peur (The Wages of Fear).  In 1977, William Friedkin brought his version, Sorcerer, to the big screen.  Both the original and Friedkin’s versions are vastly superior to the latest.

Wages of Fear aka Le salaire de la peur (2024) rates 2 of 5 stars.

“Trigger Point” (2021) starring Barry Pepper & Colm Feore / Z-View

Trigger Point (2021)

The Plot…

Nicolas Shaw (Pepper) used to be a US special agent.  He was part of a special team that targeted the worst and took them out by any means.  Then Shaw was captured and tortured.  During his abuse, Shaw finally gave up the names of others on his squad.  He was then framed for their murders.

So Shaw went into hiding.  He lived a quiet in a remote location.  Shaw thought he was safe until, Elias Kane (Feore), his former boss, showed up.  Kane’s daughter was kidnapped and Kane needs Shaw’s help.

Shaw has no choice…but can Kane be trusted?

Thoughts (beware of spoilers)…

After seeing (and loving) Barry Pepper in Bring Him to Me, I had high hopes for Trigger Point.  What a letdown.  To make things even worse, it ends setting up a sequel.  Bah!

Trigger Point (2021) rates 2 of 5 stars.
