Bryce Harper Gone: Eating Cheese Steaks

BRYCE HARPER SWEEPSTAKES
Photo of Bryce Harper as Phillie from Sports Illustrated dot com

And the Winner of the 2019 Bryce Harper Free Agent Sweepstakes is the ...Philadelphia Phillies! For only $330 Million over 13 years the biggest contract in MLB history and of all sports for that matter. No Opt-Out Option and a No Trade clause. He will finish out his career as a Phillie at age 39. So sadly for us Nationals fans that may mean if he does make the MLB Hall of Fame he would most likely go in as a Phillie since he would have been with them for almost twice as long as he was a Nat (13 years vs. 7)

I am very mixed on the news. As a fan of Hawper as a player I am glad he will still be playing, however he is playing for Philly which is a division rival. The closest division rival geographically.

Does the addition of Harper to Philly's line-up insure them championships? Maybe. It certainly puts them in the running to be contenders to be the National League East Division Champs. Some have said it practically insures them to get it, others say it doesn't guarantees but does increase the possibility. I agree it will help them in the long run to continue to be contenders. That is if Harper stays consistent and/or actually improves during his career. He is the all time leader in slugging percentage at their park.

I think I will get used to the situation. I won't like it but I will have to get used to it.

When I got a notice that there was a Topps Now card of Bryce in his new Phillies Uniform (The first official card of him in a Phillies Uni) I decided to jump at it. I ordered two copies of it today (Monday 04 Mar 2019) from the Ebay seller toppsnow for $5.99/each Free Shipping. I got a discount of 60¢ off so the total was $11.38 normally it would be $11.98 The estimated arrival date range is April 16-29 often times things will arrive a bit early. I hope so. Well since I was wondering what sort of Harper card I would show for this post I'll show the card images from the Ebay listing I am expecting to receive it from.

Welcome to CoopersTown Pudge (and Rock)

With the announcement of the 2017 Hall of Fame Class The Natxpos Franchise has two count them TWO players accepted to Cooperstown. Expos Tim "Rock" Raines (Non-DC Years) and Nats Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez (going as a Ranger aka: Senators 2.0). Raines got in on his 10th and final ballot and Ivan got in on his first ballot. Oh and there was also some guy named Bagwell but since he has no DC connection I won't mention him or show a card of his, sorry fans he doesn't fit the scope of this blog. There was another Expo who was under consideration but didn't make it this year Vladimir Guerrero missed out on the first timer train. Maybe Vlad will get in next year.

2000 Upper Deck Baseball: Most Wanted: MW3 Ivan Rodriguez Rangers

For this next card I played with the adjustments on the scan for the front of the card to try to make Pudge's name easier to read. I wasn't satisfied with the result it looks too grainy. This is actually the second scan of the card as the first one had a hair or thread across the lower left of the card and I couldn't have that.

Senators Singles: Cardinal Whitey Herzog

Whitey Herzog: Cardinals Manager
OK so here is a single that is not specifically a DC card, but a player turned manager Whitey Herzog. Whitey played for the Senators 1.0 from 1956 - 1958 and is a Hall of Famer. I got this card from a 30 card repack purchased from a dollar store. This is a duplicate as I have many of the 1988 set (but my set is still incomplete).

Frankly Friday: Managing Minor Leauge

FRANK ROBINSON:
Managing in the minors
As many may know Frank Robinson in addition to being a Hall of Fame player he was also a Manager for several teams including being the transitional manager of the Expos into the Nationals. One of his stops as a manager was with the Baltimore Orioles and their minor league affiliate the Rochester Red Wings. The Red Wings began as a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals then after 30some years became an affiliate of the Orioles and in 2003 became an affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.

Here is Frank in his Red Wings Uni. The card back interestingly gives his right handed batting and throwing, plus mentions the Cleveland Indians the last team he played on and first he managed, and mentions his coaching for the California Angels. Ah they are probably hinting at his player-manager role while with Cleveland, that must be why the player info. Frank doesn't look to happy here.
