I am still awestruck by his ability to express complex and nuanced subjects with just a few expertly placed brush strokes. I remember saving up to buy the Carter Ratcliff Sargent book and spending hours studying the images. As my painting abilities have improved, I have grown to appreciate his mastery even more. Although the date of this work is unknown, the style relates to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Art Nouveau and the period around 1900. French worked in a manner very similar to her near contemporary and close friend, Jessie M. King. This exceptionally detailed drawing highlights French’s skill as a draughtsman and her remarkably delicate linear technique. It shows Cinderella and the Ugly Sisters looking elegant and magical, an idea which is further heightened by French’s use of gold paint.
