Welcome to Treadlestitches! I'm back from a quilt retreat, and working on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks again. Two little quilts today! These are made from the potato chip blocks I've been piecing since January, 4 each month, in 10 colors. The blocks are 9 in. finished, and the quilts themselves measure 36 in. x 45 in. It was hard to decide how to divide the blocks into two quilts. I didn't want them to be just alike. Eventually I did it like this: Quilt A has the brighter colored…

I hosted my very first Sew Along through my shop the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving (November 25 & 26, 2022). We made Potato Chip blocks. I thought I would share the clues here with you in case you want to make some too. It won't be a mystery like it was for my participants, but it's still fun. To get started you need to cut a bunch of 2" by 3.5" pieces from scraps. Don't worry about color or value. If you can get at least one 2" by 3.5" piece from the scrap use it! You will need…

Good day and welcome to my blog. You may have heard of the potato chip quilt pattern? You can't make just one block! Well this past weekend and early this week I cut pieces and started piecing these blocks. It was fun! I used 2.5 inch by 4.5 inch fabric pieces, finishing at 2 by 4 inches. This is a common size. You can cut your fabrics in other sizes - but you must keep the proportion of 2:1 the same (plus seam allowances!). So 3 inch by 6 inch blocks (finished) - cut pieces 3.5 by 6.5…

I've been working to finish things recently. Some folks have told me that it looks like a jumbled mess. Yes, it's hard to see the actual block and it's really scrappy. There was no plan for this. I just started sewing pieces together and didn't worry too much about it. But I like scrappy quilts. And I like this one. If you don't, then fine - it's not your quilt. Barb H. participated in the Sew Along too and recently sent me a photo of her finished quilt. She took color into account when…

This post contains all of the directions for making ONE Potato Chip Block (Variation 2). The instructions to make the original Potato Chip Block can be found by clicking the following link: Original Potato Chip Block I cut scraps for most of this quilt. All of the "chip" pieces are scraps. I did use a single fabric as my accent fabric, but you could just pick a color and use a variety of fabrics of the same color. If you want to use the same fabric for the accent as I did, you'll need 1 to 1…
