Shawnee, city, seat (1907) of Pottawatomie county, central Oklahoma, U.S., on the North Canadian River, east-southeast of Oklahoma City. The first buildings on the town site were a log house built in 1881 by a Louisiana trapper and a Quaker mission built in 1885 to serve the Shawnee people for whom the town was named.
