The visual proof that this is happening is that the eye on the tuber starts to swell and push out of the crown of the tuber! That will eventually turn into a sprout which becomes the new dahlia plant!

Waking them up isn’t necessary before planting, but it does give you a head start on your plants and reduces chance of rot. Why? Well tubers are more likely to rot if they’re in the ground but haven’t woken up yet, because it’s not actively growing: it’s just waiting until it warms up enough to pop out of the ground. Once a tuber starts growing, the risk of rotting goes way down.
