I would like to upload an image of the lovely Nadine to Wikipedia to
complement the article about her.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nadine_Velazquez
Who do I contact to ask for permission for this kind of thing?
(The copyright and fair use rules of Wikipedia are pretty specific.
I can send more details in a follow-up email request.)
Thanks.

If she is the one who has final say over copyrights and permissions,
she should be aware of the following [from the Wikipedia copyright
guidelines]:
We can only use your materials if you are willing to grant permission
for this under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.
This means that anyone will have the right to share and, where
appropriate, to update your material [i.e., the biography page].
You can read this license in full at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text of the GFDL
The license expressly protects authors "from being considered
responsible for modifications made by others" while ensuring
that authors get credit for their work. There is more information
on our copyright policy at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights
A simple "I understand and agree to the terms of the GFDL" will do.
I will upload any relevant emails along with the image(s) to prove
that she (or whoever is granting permission) has given Wikipedia
the appropriate licensing permissions.
Thanks.

hi david, i received the email you sent about getting some images
approved to post on your site for wikipedia. I will approve it only if
you would be so kind as to update your bio of me. I prefer that you do
not mention House of the Dead as a credit and i would rather you,
instead, introduce me at Catalina on My Name is Earl as the very first
credit. Next, if you want or need a film credit, please mention that i
am in the movie Rogue with Jason Stathum and Jet Li which will be
released in 2007. Everything else is okay with me. I will approve the
images only when you've made these changes.
thank you and let me know,
nadine

Thanks so much for getting back to me.
I'm not sure if I can honor your request, though. Wikipedia
is an online encyclopedia created by anyone who wants to
contribute to it. Which means that it does not belong to me
(Jimmy Wales created it in Jan 2001), and I cannot control the
content of the articles. It currently has over 1.5 million articles
and thousands of contributors worldwide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia
On the plus side, Wikipedia is maintained by many dedicated
writers, so the content is usually pretty accurate and of fairly
high quality. It tries to maintain a professional and scholarly
tone as much as possible.
All of this is to say that, while I would love to tailor the article
on you as you would like, I don't have final say on its
content (no one does). If I delete the "House of Dead 2"
mention, someone is sure to add it back later. All I really
wanted to do was upload a nice picture of you for the article.
However, in an attempt to try to meet your wishes, I can add
a section to the article explaining that, according to you, you
prefer to distance yourself from that role (or words to that
effect); if you have a specific opinion I can quote, I can use
that. I can also add a mention of your new upcoming movie
role. Would that be good enough?
Sorry for such a long letter, but I want you to be clear about
my intentions and about how the whole Wikipedia thing
works.

I've added a note that you have specifically requested that there
be no mention of "House of Dead 2" on your article page. (Each
article has a discussion page where the contributors discuss what
should and should not be included in the article.) Wikipedia
generally takes great pains to abide by the wishes of living people
featured in biographical articles.
You can see the edits that were made as of today, including
a mention of your appearance in "Rogue":

Any picture your choose is fine. I like the IMDB one the most,
but anything you choose will be fine.

All you have to do to allow Wiki to use the image is to agree
to the term of the GNU Free Documenation Licence (GFDL),
the details of which I sent in a previous email.
I appreciate your time.
