World War II Philippines

Manila in WWII was supposed to be an open city as ordered by the Japanese commander but the commander in the city disobeyed the order and stayed. The fighting was ferocious house to house which is the worst kind. Hidden behind walls combatants can move from room to room making it more difficult to pin them down. Caves served the same purpose but were easier to destroy with flame throwers sucking out the oxygen or just sealing up the entrance with explosives. In the end the city was destroyed.
