A really engaging way for children to practise reading real and pseudo words in preparation for the Year 1 phonics screening check.  The screening takes place in June of Year 1 and entails children reading 40 words; half of which are real words and half are nonsense. The premise behind reading non-words is to check how secure children are in their phonic knowledge. If they are confident in their  phonic ability then they should be able to utilise this knowledge to read any word whether real or nonsense.
